{"id":433509,"date":"2025-03-05T12:17:14","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T17:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/?p=433509"},"modified":"2025-04-23T16:39:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T16:39:23","slug":"pga-liv-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/golf\/pga-liv-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaction: PGA-LIV Merger is Leaving Players Optimistic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the wake of talks concerning a PGA and LIV <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/02\/14\/pga-tour-liv-merge-talks\/\" target=\"_self\">merger<\/a>, some players switched to LIV and seem to have some regrets with their decision.\u00a0 Many have expressed how they missed being able to compete with their fellow PGA players.\u00a0 Others have lost their standing on the world leaderboards because of how LIV works compared to other associations.\u00a0 Some are also losing their relevance, again because of how LIV works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Relations between the two associations have gone from hostile to much more amicable in the past year.\u00a0 Initially, when players were switching to LIV the PGA would suspend those players from competing in their events.\u00a0 However, many <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/02\/25\/is-a-pga-and-liv-merger-actually-good-for-the-game\/\" target=\"_self\">PGA and LIV<\/a> players have played against each other on friendly terms in the last year in other events like in the Ryder Cup.\u00a0 The merger itself has plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/02\/25\/is-a-pga-and-liv-merger-actually-good-for-the-game\/\" target=\"_self\">pros and cons<\/a> for both leagues, but what are the former PGA players thinking on this?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dustin Johnson On His Time With LIV Golf<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dustin Johnson seems more content with how his LIV career is turning out for himself.\u00a0 He did, however, lose his number one spot in the world rankings.\u00a0 Johnson also eventually lost his career-long TaylorMade <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2025\/02\/11\/speculation-arises-after-dustin-johnson-and-taylormade-split\/\" target=\"_self\">sponsorship<\/a> but he isn&#8217;t letting that bother him.\u00a0 He is looking forward to a merger, he is quoted as saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I believe this agreement will only enhance LIV, which is already fantastic.&#8221;\u00a0 He went on to say, &#8220;I&#8217;m perfectly happy where I am, and I certainly don&#8217;t intend to play more golf than I currently do, that&#8217;s for sure.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite losing his ranking, Johnson seems to prefer the more laid-back way LIV works and is taking an &#8220;it is what it is&#8221; approach to the merger.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brooks Koepka Floating the Idea of Returning to PGA<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This comes out from Brooks Koepka and Fred Couples&#8217; private chat that Couples revealed <a  href=\"https:\/\/933kjr.iheart.com\/featured\/dave-softy-mahler\/content\/2025-02-27-59-softy-dick-interviews-broadcasting-legend-jim-nantz-seattle-golf-legend-\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">details<\/a> from.\u00a0 In this chat Koepka is talking about how he missed the PGA and is looking to return to the old status quo, his career had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI talk to Brooks Koepka all the time,\u201d he told Seattle sports radio station KJR 93.3FM.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI love Brooks Koepka, and I&#8217;m not going to say anything extra except I talk to him all the time. He wants to come back. I will say that I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bryson DeChambeau and His Contract On The Verge of Expiration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Byson DeChambeau was one of the first to jump ship with an initial contract worth $125 million.\u00a0 LIV has however rejected a contract renewal that was reportedly asking for $280 million.\u00a0 Due to that renewal being rejected, DeChambeau seems to be leaving LIV when his contract expires in 2027 and is rumored to be looking to rejoin PGA Tour.\u00a0 Other players are itching to see DeChambeau return like Rory McIlroy who voiced his opinion on Netflix\u2019s Full Swing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McIlroy said: &#8220;Bryson is exactly what the game of golf needs right now. I would certainly like the opportunity to play against him a little more often.
