We are on the verge of a long awaited merger between two prominent identities within the sport of golf. This involvement is surrounded between the PGA Tour and LIV<\/a>, attempting to find a roadway to bring the two together. It has been easier said than done, with the recruitment of powerful figures who may have some pull in the process. Although this decision has sparked some long-awaited enthusiasm, it also is starting to create tension amongst the players<\/a>. One in particular being Rory Mcllory who has seen himself at the forefront of media questions as of late. Being in such a crucial stage of discussions, there are a few things to keep highlighted with this situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mcllory Has His Doubts on Merge<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since becoming a member of the PGA Tour in 2010, Mcllory has been a prominent face of the sport. Although, he has recently been at the forefront of the media<\/a> due to his skeptical feelings at hand. At one point in time a true opponent of LIV Golf, Mcllory has now shifted into a mindset of seeing its financial benefit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy mentioned during his time at the pro-am for the Genesis Invitational<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you stayed on the PGA Tour or you left, we have all benefited from this. I\u2019ve been on the record saying this a lot: We\u2019re playing for a $20 million prize fund this week. That would have never happened if LIV hadn\u2019t come around. I think everyone\u2019s just got to get over it, and we all have to say, OK, this is the starting point, and we move forward. We don\u2019t look behind us. We don\u2019t look to the past. Whatever happened has happened and it\u2019s been unfortunate, but reunification, how we all come back together and move forward, that\u2019s the best thing for everyone\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the main points in this merger for many including Mcllory, is ultimately the \u201creunification\u201d of both. It\u2019s the opportunity to make a significant amount of money while giving the most deserving in the sport, a chance to showcase their talents on a big stage. Bringing the two together would unlock more opportunities seen in the past, but give the fans all the top athletes in one setting. Being able to bring back names like US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau<\/a>, Cameron Smith, and John Rahm will influence bigger viewership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can PGA Tour and LIV Reps Save the Day?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

These talks are nothing new, as this merger was first introduced in June of 2023. Yet, the fire has picked up and now created a real outlet to build on for both party\u2019s. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, has been at the forefront of this attempt as of late. Most recently sharing a few thoughts at the Genesis Invitational on where he thinks the situation stands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you\u2019re ever close until you\u2019re finalized,\u201d Monahan said. \u201cI would say this, Everything is moving forward with pace. When you look at all the parties involved, there\u2019s a general enthusiasm for getting this done.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The common slogan for the attempt at bringing the two together has been recognized as \u201cunification\u201d. It is the wish to deliver one single Tour having all of the top ranked players who are able to move the needle of the sport. In the attempt of gaining more backing, Monahan met with President Donald Trump<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussing the merger and how the influence could push things in the right direction. According to reports, Strategic Sports Group invested $ 1.5 billion into the newly created Tour Enterprises. This allowed for numerous players to gain equity grants, searching for their word to stay on the PGA Tour. While both groups will be expected to continue talks for some time, this is a step in the right direction for the sport. The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, will have a big part as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With their financial backing of LIV, it will be crucial for chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan to also see the bigger picture.<\/span><\/p>\n
