Webb Simpson,\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/2020\/06\/21\/webb-simpson-wins-rbc-heritage\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">last week\u2019s RBC Heritage winner<\/a>, and Chase Koepka, Brooks\u2019 brother who qualified on Monday, also announced their withdrawals on Wednesday, citing \u201ccaution\u201d as the reason, rather than a positive test.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BFiUc9FBoG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/BFiUc9FBoG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BKoepka\/status\/1275867349867016192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 24, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right thing to do right now is to get home, support Ricky, and feel confident that I\u2019m doing what I can do protecting my fellow TOUR members, my PGA Tour friends, and everyone associated with the Travelers Championship this week,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BKoepka\/status\/1275867349867016192\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koepka said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before the PGA Tour restarted at the Charles Schwab Challenge, health and safety guidelines were\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/takeaways-pga-tour-health-safety-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlined in a 37-page document.<\/a> No fans were allowed. Social distancing was a reality. Players traveled on a chartered plane from one tournament to the next.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the changes, COVID-19 cases appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Is it a by-product of these pandemic times or could the PGA Tour have prevented this?<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/asaptxt.com\/orgs\/pgatour\/460\/transcripts\/46860.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asked whether he expects more positive tests, Monahan responded:\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI don&#8217;t think anybody should be surprised. I&#8217;m certainly hopeful we won&#8217;t. But to be able to say that we&#8217;re going to not have any cases, and to be able to look you in the eye across the television screen and say we&#8217;re not going to have any cases would be disingenuous because we are all learning as we&#8217;re going.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>***<\/h2>\n<p>As sports organizations like the PGA Tour continue to learn and adapt, the virus is infecting Americans at an alarming rate.\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/cases-updates\/cases-in-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),<\/a> there were 34,313 new cases on Wednesday, with a total of 2.3 million across the country and 121,117 deaths. 3,286 new cases occurred in Florida on Wednesday, 5,489 in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers like these are unavoidable. This is the backdrop that the PGA Tour is resuming under.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines required improvement. Stricter enforcement of social distancing is a must since many players and caddies were \u201chigh fiving\u201d and standing closer together. Testing needs to be increased, so contract tracing can occur accurately.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Wednesday,\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/willahmed\/status\/1275785789754966017\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the PGA Tour announced<\/a>\u00a0that 1,000 WHOOP straps were procured to players, media, caddies, and essential workers, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think over the first couple weeks, we&#8217;ve seen some instances where let&#8217;s say we&#8217;ve gotten a little bit lax or away from protocol,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/asaptxt.com\/orgs\/pgatour\/460\/transcripts\/46860.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monahan said.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cAll of us have an extraordinary responsibility to follow those protocols. For any individual that does not, there will be serious repercussions, and I&#8217;m not going to get into the specifics of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday morning, players will tee it up at TPC River Highlands, marking the start of another Travelers Championship.
