The highly rated young <\/span><b>German<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goalkeeper has made a rapid recovery from a pre-season hand injury. Karius recently made his competitive debut in the <\/span><b>League Cup<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> win against <\/span><b>Derby County<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mignolet, in the meantime, has reigned as the number one &#8216;keeper unopposed until now. \u00a0<\/span><b>J\u00fcrgen<\/b> <b>Klopp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now has a goalkeeping selection conundrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorius Karius<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karius was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/sport\/football\/football-news\/liverpool-bound-loris-karius-voted-11376318\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rated the second best goalkeeper<\/a> in the <\/span><b>Bundesliga\u00a0<\/b>last season<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before making the switch from <\/span><b>FSV Mainz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>Anfield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fellow professionals in the German top flight rated only <\/span><b>Manuel Neuer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher. This is elite company for a 22-year-old goalkeeper to be rated alongside. Neuer has been one of the stand-out goalkeepers in world football for the past few seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Bayern Munich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stopper has revolutionised the goalkeeping position with his sweeper-like skills and brilliant saves. Comparisons between Karius and Neuer are evident. Both like to push out beyond their box when their team is attacking; both are very comfortable on the ball whether passing the ball short or distributing it long. Karius, like Neuer, can read the game, mopping up many counter attacks simply by good starting positioning and anticipation of danger. Karius\u00a0is also an excellent shot stopper, as evidenced by his almost <a href=\"http:\/\/scores.nbcsports.msnbc.com\/bund\/players.asp?player=119827\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six out of ten penalties saved rate.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Mignolet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mignolet ended last season as the undisputed Liverpool number one. His banner season since joining the Reds was the thrilling title challenge in 2013-14. Even in that brilliant season, questions arose over his all-round game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mignolet has shown superb reflexes at times and he kept the <a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2015\/10\/19\/liverpool-goalkeeper-has-most-clean-sheets-in-the-premier-league-in-2015-stats-show-5446842\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most clean sheets <\/a>\u00a0in the Premier League in 2015. The <\/span><b>Belgian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> international has faced criticism for his shakiness under the high ball, and also his command of the defence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liverpool\u2019s defence over the last three seasons has been far from solid, and Mignolet at times perhaps unfairly bore more of the blame than the unit as a whole. Klopp was ruthless in addressing this by discarding players like <\/span><b>Jose Enrique<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Martin Skrtel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Kolo Toure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Importantly, Klopp also purchased Karius.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy Competition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time perhaps since <\/span><b>Brad Friedel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>David James<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> battled to be the Reds&#8217; first choice &#8216;keeper, there is genuine competition for the number one spot. Mignolet currently holds sway as the starter so far in the Premier League, but Karius has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/sport\/football\/transfer-news\/karius-im-not-liverpool-fc-11611313\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated his determination to claim the starting role<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both stoppers are competitive\u00a0and it will\u00a0come down to fine margins as to who Klopp entrusts as his main keeper. Karius does have in his favour the fact that Klopp personally signed him, and also his kicking\/sweeping ability. The starting team sheet for the game against\u00a0<\/span><b>Hull City <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this coming weekend will be telling.
