Number two Matt Ingram left to join West Brom, which leaves veteran keeper Simon Eastwood as Jamie Cumming’s backup.

Up top is another concern, with Mark Harris the only senior striker. Gatlin O’Donkor has spent the last few seasons away on loan, while Nik Prelec could leave in the summer with links to a move to Poland.

Ramsey will hope his former Wales teammate Harris will stay fit until the January transfer window when the embargo is lifted.

On paper, the current squad is still good enough to compete in League One, but this will depend on whether the club are able to keep hold of their key players during the window.

The Winners and Losers

The youngsters are the winners here. The likes of James Golding in defence and Leo Snowden on the wing will be pushing for minutes. There are also fringe players like Louie Sibley and Peter Kioso who have spent time away on loan that could benefit from the embargo.

There is only one loser, and that is the club. Oxford would have been hoping to push for promotion this season, but this setback could severely hamper their chances of achieving their goals.

What Should Oxford United do Next?

Oxford need to keep hold of key players, as losing them in this would could be catastrophic. The likes of Jack Currie, Stan Mills and Tyler Goodrham would have attracted interest this summer, but the club need to keep hold of them if they are to have a chance of competing.

Then there are players in key positions, such as the defence and up top, where they lack depth. There will also be players, like Brian De Keersmaecker, who could play an important role should the club manage to keep hold of him.

As mentioned before, youngsters and fringe players could also play a key part, particularly if Ramsey is struggling with injuries and suspensions.

The Financial Picture

Financially, the club are still relatively sound, but ultimately, this isn’t a good look for the owners.

Erik Thohir is a successful businessman with plenty of financial input, but this isn’t the first time the club have found themselves in a similar position under his tenure.

Of course, Thohir is funding the club’s new stadium, but for that to be a success, the day-to-day running of Oxford United needs significant improvements.

If Tom Burrows is correct, then the embargo is for not evidencing that the club have the funds to fulfil the budget. That could come down to an administrative error, in terms of calculation for the SCMP, but alternatively, Thohir isn’t prepared to put his money in as freely, and the club may need to sell key assets to address this.

Featured image courtesy of IMAGO / Focus Images

On Thursday, reports claimed that Oxford United had been placed under a temporary transfer embargo.
