Argentina are through to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but only after producing one of the greatest escapes of Lionel Scaloni’s tenure. Trailing 2-0 with little over 10 minutes remaining, the defending champions scored three goals between the 79th and 92nd minutes to stun Egypt 3-2 and shatter what would have been one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.<\/p>\n
For long stretches, Egypt looked destined to write its own football fairy tale. Mohamed Salah stood on the verge of leading his country into the last eight, Cairo was preparing for a night of celebration, and Argentina looked rattled, passive and out of answers. Then Lionel Messi reminded the football world why Argentina are still defending champions.<\/p>\n
The opening hour only reinforced the concerns surrounding Argentina after their labored extra-time victory over Cape Verde<\/a>.<\/p>\n Lionel Scaloni’s side once again looked vulnerable defensively. Their wingbacks were repeatedly caught in transition, the attack lacked width, and almost every move became predictable as Argentina insisted on attacking through the middle. Julian Alvarez was handed the start at striker, but never appeared fully comfortable and struggled to influence the match.<\/p>\n Egypt, meanwhile, played with complete belief. The breakthrough came after just 15 minutes when Marwan Attia delivered a perfect ball into the area and Yasser Ibrahim rose to head home, sending the Egyptian supporters into delirium.<\/p>\n Argentina were handed an immediate opportunity to respond after Egypt committed a last-man foul inside the penalty area. Lionel Messi stepped forward, but his recent struggles from the penalty spot continued as Mostafa Shobeir produced an outstanding save to preserve Egypt’s advantage.<\/p>\n The goalkeeper would go on to have the game of his life. Although Argentina controlled possession and finished the first half with a significant advantage in shots, Shobeir repeatedly frustrated Messi and company. Egypt defended bravely, stayed organized, and reached halftime still leading 1-0 despite absorbing wave after wave of pressure.<\/p>\n It was exactly the type of game Argentina had struggled with throughout this tournament.<\/p>\n The second half initially followed the same script.<\/p>\n Argentina pushed forward but remained painfully slow in possession, while Egypt looked increasingly dangerous every time they countered. Mostafa Ziko thought he had doubled the advantage in the 59th minute before VAR ruled the goal out for a foul earlier in the move.<\/p>\n It proved only a temporary reprieve.<\/p>\n Recognizing the game slipping away, Scaloni finally acted. Nico Gonzalez replaced Nicolas Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel entered for Nahuel Molina and Lautaro Martinez came on as Rodrigo De Paul departed.<\/p>\n Two of the changes had barely settled when Egypt struck again. Haissem Hassan, who had run himself into the ground throughout the evening, produced another excellent moment down the wing before setting up Ziko, who this time made no mistake.<\/p>\n Two-nil.<\/p>\n Bedlam in Cairo. Panic in Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n Argentina, the defending world champions, were staring directly at elimination.<\/p>\n Football, however, can change in an instant.<\/p>\n Hassan was forced off through injury shortly afterward, while Omar Marmoush replaced goalscorer Ziko. Egypt suddenly lost some of the intensity that had carried them for nearly 80 minutes, and Argentina immediately sensed the opening.<\/p>\n Messi delivered a superb cross that Cristian Romero powered home to make it 2-1 in the 79th minute. Four minutes later the captain took matters into his own hands. Montiel found Messi inside the area, and this time there would be no mistake as Argentina’s No. 10 calmly finished to level the match. Messi moving into the RW role help spark Argentina’s attack.<\/p>\n Egypt had completely unraveled.<\/p>\n With confidence evaporating and anger rising, the composure that had defined their performance for over an hour disappeared. Deep into stoppage time, Lisandro Martinez drove forward from defence before finding Enzo Fernandez, whose finish completed one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament.<\/p>\n From 2-0 down. To 3-2 ahead. In just 13 breathtaking minutes, all while Leandro Paredes made a key tackle to deny Egypt a third goal.<\/p>\n For Salah and Egypt, disbelief. For Argentina, pure relief.<\/p>\n After the match, Mostafa Zico harshly criticized the referees and said<\/a> “The Cup is being given to Argentina<\/em>“, continuing a trend this tournament of FIFA referees facing significant criticism. Egypt believed that Salah was also fouled in the box late and should have<\/a> been given a penalty, just before the game winner was scored by Argentina.<\/p>\n The comeback will rightly be remembered as a display of championship mentality.<\/p>\n It will also raise uncomfortable questions.<\/p>\n For the second consecutive<\/a> knockout match, Argentina looked sluggish, predictable and tactically vulnerable. Cape Verde dragged them into extra time. Egypt had them on the ropes until the closing stages. Against stronger opponents like Colombia or Switzerland, those same flaws could prove fatal.<\/p>\n Scaloni was once again outcoached for long stretches before individual quality rescued the result. Argentina’s defenders, particularly Romero and Lisandro Martinez, often looked like the team’s best ball progressors, a remarkable statement considering the wealth of talent available in midfield.<\/p>\n Supporters continue loudly questioning whether younger, more dynamic players such as Nico Paz and Giuliano Simeone deserve greater opportunities as Argentina search for more width and movement. Simeone in particular is a great off ball runner and Argentina lack that in the current 10 outfield players.<\/p>\n The warning signs remain impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n Egypt deserved enormous credit for the way they approached the match. Shobeir was magnificent in goal. Hassan was outstanding until injury forced him off, while Ziko constantly threatened Argentina on the counterattack. Mo Salah gave his all for his country despite physical limitations.<\/p>\n Yet, just as Belgium overturned Senegal in the previous round, Egypt allowed the game to slip away when victory appeared within touching distance. Many supporters were left asking the same question after another African side surrendered a winning position late in the tournament.<\/p>\n Talent has never been the issue. Managing the biggest moments continues to be. Whether that reflects mentality<\/a>, tactical discipline or simply tournament experience will be debated long after the final whistle. While CAF has one team left in the World Cup, Morocco, CONCACAF and AFC have also seen all of their qualified nations go home, the UEFA vs CONEMBOL battle at the World Cup carries on.<\/p>\n Argentina survive. Again.<\/p>\n Messi continues to chase both another World Cup title and the Golden Boot, and once again he was at the center of everything that mattered for his country. But the defending champions cannot keep relying on miracles. The quality remains undeniable. The belief remains unshaken. The performances, however, are drifting further away from the standard expected of world champions.
