Thomas Tuchel’s side defeated Mexico 3-2 at Estadio Azteca in a match that featured spectacular goals, a red card, two penalties, relentless pressure and a dramatic finish. England played the final 35 minutes with 10 men, but showed the composure and defensive organization expected of a genuine contender. This was a highly anticipated game, and it turned into one of the best of the tournament rather quickly.

Jude Bellingham Silences Estadio Azteca

For much of the opening half, Mexico looked like the better side. Javier Aguirre’s team had the edge in possession, fed off the energy of over 80,000 supporters and repeatedly tested Jordan Pickford. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez forced the England goalkeeper into several excellent saves, while Julian Quinones and Roberto Alvarado continued to threaten down the wings.

Then, in the space of two minutes, Jude Bellingham completely changed the game.

Bukayo Saka delivered a dangerous cross in the 36th minute and Bellingham arrived perfectly to give England the lead. Barely two minutes later, Harry Kane slipped another excellent pass into the area and once again Bellingham timed his run to perfection, doubling England’s advantage and silencing one of football’s loudest stadiums, even if only for a few minutes. Bellingham’s consecutive goals were the only ones that Mexico had conceded in four games at the World Cup.

Bellingham has been England’s outstanding attacking midfielder throughout this tournament, combining goals with clutch maturity. At 2-0 England appeared comfortable, but Mexico refused to fold. Julian Quinones finally beat Pickford before halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1, ensuring the hosts still had belief heading into the break.

The first half also exposed one of Aguirre’s biggest decisions. CB Cesar Montes, who reportedly entered the match carrying fitness concerns, struggled throughout and was involved in both England goals before eventually being replaced at halftime by Edson Alvarez. Montes also missed a chance to level the match into the half, missing a header, as Pickford continued to have a brave, veteran night for the Three Lions.

Thomas Tuchel Gets Every Decision Right

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeFboRSidF" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4999px; aspect-ratio: 4999/3333;" ></smartframe-embed>

England’s evening became far more complicated in the 54th minute when Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge. Playing more than half an hour with 10 men inside Estadio Azteca could easily have unraveled England’s World Cup.

Instead, Thomas Tuchel calmly adjusted.

Rather than asking Declan Rice to fill in defensively at RB, Tuchel sacrificed Bukayo Saka and introduced John Stones, moving him into the back line. With Reece James unavailable through injury and Quansah dismissed, England suddenly looked thin defensively, but Tuchel’s solution immediately stabilized the side.

Just minutes later England struck the decisive blow. Anthony Gordon’s pace caught Mexico’s defence sleeping, forcing goalkeeper Raul “Tala” Rangel into bringing him down inside the penalty area. Harry Kane stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, restoring England’s two-goal advantage at 3-1 and once again delivering in the biggest moment.

The penalty completely changed the tactical picture. Instead of patiently attacking against 10 men, Mexico suddenly needed two goals, forcing Aguirre to become increasingly aggressive with his substitutions.

Mexico Runs Out of Ideas

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB0acrSAbK" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Trailing by two goals, Aguirre responded by replacing Brian Gutierrez with Luis Romo and sacrificing teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora for striker Santiago Gimenez. Neither change gave Mexico the attacking spark they desperately needed.

Raul Jimenez converted a penalty in the 69th minute after Harry Kane was penalized inside England’s area, reducing the deficit to 3-2 and setting up a frantic final 20 minutes. Tuchel immediately responded by shutting the game down completely, introducing Djed Spence and Dan Burn as England shifted into a back five.

Those defensive substitutions proved masterful.

Burn with his height dominated the aerial battles with 6 clearances, Stones organized the defence, including a late deflection of Jimenez, Mexico’s final chance, and England willingly surrendered possession knowing Mexico would have to break them down.

Aguirre’s final substitutions, however, were much more questionable. Alvaro Fidalgo entered for Jorge Sanchez, a move that should have happened sooner, but the biggest surprise was removing Julian Quinones, Mexico’s most dangerous attacker, for Liga MX striker Guillermo Martinez. Santiago Gimenez again struggled to influence the match, while Liga MX Golden Boot winner Hormiga Gonzalez never saw the field.

Without Quinones, without Gonzalez, Mexico’s attack simply fizzled out. The crosses became increasingly hopeful, England dealt comfortably with nearly every delivery and despite Mexico finishing the final stanza with almost 80 percent possession after the red card, Mexico rarely looked capable of creating the clear chance they desperately needed.

Even with 11 minutes of added time, England’s defensive shape never truly looked close to breaking. It was pressure without precision, and Tuchel’s side defended with the discipline and maturity expected of a team chasing a World Cup.

England Advances While Mexico Falls Short Again

England now move on to a blockbuster quarterfinal against Norway in Miami. Harry Kane versus Erling Haaland headlines one of the tournament’s biggest matches, while Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard will battle for control of midfield. Quansah’s suspension creates an obvious selection headache for Tuchel, but England leave Mexico City knowing they have already passed one of their toughest tests of the tournament.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBGeHaUG2j" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 7542px; aspect-ratio: 7542/5226;" ></smartframe-embed>

For Mexico, elimination will sting, but there are still positives to take away. Javier Aguirre rebuilt belief around El Tri, turned Estadio Azteca back into a fortress throughout the tournament and inspired millions across Mexico and the United States to rally behind this team. Defensively they were outstanding for much of the World Cup, while Julian Quinones emerged as one of the breakout stars of the competition.

Yet the same frustration remains.

Mexico once again reached the World Cup Round of 16. Mexico once again came painfully close. Against England they had the crowd, the momentum and more than half an hour with a numerical advantage, but when they needed creativity most, their attack simply ran out of ideas. The same limitation of Aguirre’s Mexico for this entire World Cup cycle.

The Gold Cup cycle begins almost immediately, and Mexico should leave this tournament believing the gap has narrowed. But until El Tri consistently find enough quality in the final third to punish elite opponents, they will remain one of world football’s great “almost” stories rather than one of its true contenders. England marches on from their CONCACAF experience, still believing in their Wonderwall.

Main Photo Credit: Smartframe Images

England Survives Estadio Azteca With 3-2 World Cup Win Over Mexico England are through to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after surviving one of the toughest environments in international football.
