Playing at Estadio Azteca will continue to be a great motivator for El Tri, as they are slight favorites against a defensively brave Ecuador side that engineered a 2-1 comeback win over Germany to qualify for the knockout phase. Javier Aguirre was Mexico’s manager when they beat Ecuador at the 2002 World Cup, a more recent clash featuring relatively current squads was at the 2024 Copa America, where a pro-Mexico crowd in the United States saw their team eliminated from the group stage by way of a 0-0 draw. Ecuador would advance and go on to lose to Argentina on penalties at that tournament. Their 2025 friendly was also a draw, as there’s not much to separate these sides.

Much has been said about Mexico’s “altitude advantage” at Estadio Azteca, already some of their group stage opponents have appeared sluggish and out of sorts later in matches. Ecuador has a number of players who grew up playing at altitude, but much of Ecuador’s current squad is based in Europe and no longer regularly do so. Conditioning over 90+ minutes will certainly be a factor in this contest.

Ecuador built great momentum after finally finding a way to score to defeat Germany 2-1 and advance. While Mexico has chased perfection in the group stage, Ecuador chased redemption from a slow start that featured a narrow loss to Ivory Coast, and a shocking draw against Curacao. They objectively played well against a solid Germany team and responded to adversity after going behind early.

The changes manager Sebastian Beccacece made to the lineup was a big factor in altering Ecuador’s fortunes. Gonzalo Plata scored the winning goal and should continue as a forward. Nilson Angulo was the other goalscorer, while Kevin Rodriguez was a super sub for veteran striker Enner Valencia, and both Alan Franco and Pedro Vite, who plays in Mexico’s Liga MX with Pumas were standouts in the midfield.

Ecuador has three players on this squad who play in Mexico’s Liga MX alongside or against many of El Tri’s squad. Vite, as mentioned, is a key player for Pumas who were great in the league last season, backup defender Jackson Porozo plays for Tijuana Xolos, and the veteran Valencia plays for Pachuca, having previously been a star for Tigres UANL. Valencia has appeared in 140 Liga MX games, but there’s still an argument to start the young Rodriguez, given his instant impact against Germany.

After the Germany result, Beccacece remarked “Enner is the living heritage and legacy of Ecuador, with the number of international caps, how he works, how he commits, how much joy he brings.
