Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has reportedly informed the club that he wants to leave this summer, according to David Ornstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Sweden international joined Spurs in 2024 but is now said to be seeking a fresh challenge after finding opportunities increasingly limited under Roberto De Zerbi.<\/p>\n

Despite still having five years remaining on his current contract, Bergvall’s future now appears uncertain as Tottenham continue reshaping their squad ahead of the 2026\/27 campaign.<\/p>\n

Tottenham Midfielder Could Leave After Two Seasons<\/h2>\n

Lucas Bergvall’s Career So Far<\/h3>\n

Bergvall began his senior career with Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna before joining Djurg\u00e5rdens IF in 2022.<\/p>\n

The midfielder made 47 appearances and scored nine goals for Djurg\u00e5rden despite still being just 17 and 18 years old, quickly establishing himself as one of Europe’s brightest young prospects.<\/p>\n

Tottenham agreed a deal worth \u00a38.5 million in January 2024, with the transfer becoming official that summer.<\/p>\n

Since arriving in north London, Bergvall has made 78 appearances, scoring two goals while playing an important role in Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League triumph in 2025 after breaking into the first team under Ange Postecoglou.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old is currently representing Sweden at the FIFA World Cup, making substitute appearances in each of his nation’s opening two group-stage fixtures to take his senior international tally to 12 caps.<\/p>\n

Why Is Lucas Bergvall Seeking a Move?<\/h3>\n

Ornstein’s report came as a surprise to many Tottenham supporters, with Bergvall remaining a popular figure among the fanbase. However, there are several factors that may explain his desire for a new challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his debut season in north London, Bergvall made 45 appearances, accumulating more than 1,200 Premier League minutes and over 2,300 minutes across all competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those numbers fell significantly during the 2025\/26 campaign. He featured just 33 times, playing 967 Premier League minutes and 1,465 minutes in all competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Injuries accounted for part of that reduction, with Bergvall missing 13 matches throughout the season. However, managerial changes also affected his role.<\/span><\/p>\n

The midfielder was a regular under Thomas Frank before suffering injury during much of Igor Tudor’s spell in charge. Since De Zerbi’s appointment, Bergvall has started only once, in the Italian’s first match at Sunderland. <\/span><\/p>\n

He then made four substitute appearances totalling just 51 minutes before being an unused substitute in Tottenham’s final two fixtures of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tottenham are also pursuing midfield reinforcements including Sandro Tonali<\/a> and Mateus Fernandes<\/a>, and with no European football next season and therefore fewer fixtures, opportunities for squad players are likely to become even more limited.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Could It Mean for Tottenham?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Tottenham’s midfield appears set for another significant overhaul this summer, with Bergvall’s potential departure adding to the changes already taking place.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his opening seven matches in charge, De Zerbi consistently favoured Jo\u00e3o Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher ahead of Bergvall, while James Maddison’s return from a long-term knee injury has further increased competition alongside Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr.<\/span><\/p>\n

Should Spurs also complete moves for Tonali and Fernandes, competition for places would become even stronger, particularly in Bergvall’s preferred box-to-box midfield role.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Lucas Bergvall’s departure would come as a surprise given his age and potential, a move elsewhere could ultimately benefit all parties if regular first-team football is not available under De Zerbi.<\/span><\/p>\n
