After a fantastic youth career, Gomes never made the cut at Old Trafford, however, since leaving Manchester has gone on to have a solid career. At just 25, he still has a huge future ahead of him.

Manchester United Wonderkids Who Didn’t Make the Grade – Angel Gomes

Legendary Roots

Gomes was born in August 2000 when his future club, Manchester United, were in their pomp. Having just come off the back of a treble-winning season, United went on to win the Premier League again in the 1999-2000 season.

Fast forward to 2007 and Gomes’ godfather signed for United. Fan favourite and backflipping extraordinaire, Nani signed for The Red Devils and was a massive influence on Gomes’ career.

The youngster was already training at Manchester United, having started at the age of six and would make his under-18s debut at just 14 years old. He would go on to sign as an academy first-year scholar ahead of the 2016–17 season. The London-born attacking midfielder would score a hat-trick against Everton, becoming the third player to score three goals in a game at the age of 15.

During the 2016-17 season, Gomes recorded 11 goals and six assists in 17 appearances for the under-18s, winning the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the season award. For context, Marcus Rashford had won the award the year before, showing just how prestigious an award it is. Gomes remains the youngest recipient of the award in United’s history.

Read More: Manchester United Wonderkids Who Didn’t Make It: Giuseppe Rossi

First Team Debut and Portuguese Venture

The end of the 2016-17 season saw Gomes make history. He came on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney in United’s final game of the season. He was the youngest player to represent The Reds since the legendary Duncan Edwards in 1953, and became the first player born in the 2000s to play in the Premier League. At 16 years, 263 days, Gomes was certainly a Manchester United wonderkid with a lot of potential.

It didn’t ever take off for Gomes after his debut, despite signing his first professional contract in December 2017. Although he would get opportunities in the FA Cup, Gomes mostly operated in the youth teams in the 2018-2019 season, scoring six goals and getting five assists in 16 games. He did all he could to crack into the first team, however, during the 2019-2020 season, first team minutes dried up.

Following the conclusion of his contract, Manchester United and Gomes couldn’t come to an agreement on a contract extension and the record-breaker was released on a free.

Gomes went on to sign a five year deal with French team Lille and immediately went out on loan to Portuguese side, Boavista. This move marked Gomes’ first taste of regular, first team, men’s football. On his debut, he notched a hat-trick of assists and would go on to score from the halfway line a few weeks later. It’s safe to say that of the Manchester United wonderkids to be let go, he was certainly looking like a mistake.

With six goals in 32 appearances for Boavista, he returned to Lille ready to fight for his place in a more competitive league.

Read More: Manchester United wonderkids who didn’t make it: Federico Macheda

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBK9X0NNDA" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2552px; aspect-ratio: 2552/1701;" ></smartframe-embed>

Return to Lille

Following a successful loan move in Portugal, the former Manchester United man returned to his parent club, Lille, in an attempt to fight for his place. Playing for Lille, Gomes was predominantly utilised as a back-up attacking midfielder, getting opportunities to compete in the Champions League. He scored his first European goal against VfL Wolfsburg, however, the French side would be knocked out of the competition at the hands of Chelsea, with Gomes not able to influence the game.

Although he played 24 league games, Gomes didn’t play a full 90 minutes in the league throughout the entire first season.

His second season was far more successful, however. Under new head coach Paulo Fonseca, Gomes was much more favoured. Gomes became a regular under the Portuguese manager, making 36 appearances across the season in the league, notching six assists and two goals. It’s safe to say that the 2022-2023 season was Gomes’ big breakout season. He aided his team in gaining Europa Conference League play-offs.

Gomes continued his good form in his third season with Lille. He finished the season with 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice but importantly, recording 10 assists in all competitions. In the league, he recorded eight assists, finishing joint-top assist provider.

Final Lille Season & Marseille Move

Gomes’ form faltered slightly during his final season at Lille. Fonseca left for AC Milan and new head coach Bruno Genesio didn’t see Gomes in the same light as his predecessor. After just 10 starts and 10 appearances on the bench, Gomes’ progress slowed down. This season also saw Gomes suffer with injuries, something that he hadn’t had to deal with much up until this point. He missed 14 games due to injury. At the end of the 2024-2025 season, Lille decided against renewing his contract, leading to potential free agency.

It would be Marseille that would gain Gomes’ signature, despite apparent interest from both Tottenham and a return to Old Trafford. Marseille had just finished second under Roberto de Zerbi and appeared to be building something to challenge PSG.

With that being said, it simply didn’t work for Gomes at Marseille. He would begin his tenure at the Stade Velodrome in a deep playmaking position, before moving further up the pitch to a more desired position.

Gomes would only play 14 league games for Marseille before being offered out to other clubs on loan. He would secure a move back to England, moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The playmaker was brought in to try and save them from relegation, however, ultimately he failed to do this, with the team finishing in 20th position. Whether Gomes will return and fight for his place at Marseille is yet unknown.

Why Didn’t it Work for Gomes at United?

There’s little denying that more Manchester United wonderkids don’t make it than those who do. With that being said, the case of Angel Gomes is a surprising one. He certainly has the talent, however, when he was coming through, he struggled for game time.

It was a transitional period for Manchester United during Gomes’ final season. Boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferred Andres Pereira and Jesse Lingard during the beginning of the season in the attacking roles, as opposed to Gomes. Once Bruno Fernandes came into the club, it was all but over for Gomes.

It could be argued that he was simply a good player at the wrong time for United. Only time will tell, however, he appears to have what it takes to compete in the Premier League. He gained four England caps in 2024 but has been out of the squad ever since, perhaps a similar story in his international career.

Don’t be shocked to see another one of the Manchester United wonderkids running around and performing well in the Premier League and at the highest level next season.

Featured Image Credit:

IMAGO / Propaganda

In the fourth in-depth look at Manchester United wonderkids who didn’t make it, we analyse the Manchester United career and beyond of Angel Gomes.
