Chelsea kicked off 2026 with the departure of Enzo Maresca. The Italian parted way with the Blues just months after winning the Club World Cup and Europa Conference League. With that move came some big shoes to fill as the Blues went from a title race in October to a top-four race by January and it was Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg who ended up being tasked with that herculean effort to steady the ship and steer it upward. Things have gone about as poorly as possible and the Englishman now finds himself as the fifth permanent coach to leave since Clearlake took over.<\/p>\n

A Disappointing Tenure<\/h3>\n

After the standard new manager bounce that featured wins over Charlton, Napoli, and West Ham, the team ran into a bit of a wall. The Arsenal trilogy saw them fail to get a win, then they dropped points against Leeds, and finally there was that night in Paris where the wheels completely came off in the Champions League.<\/p>\n

Ever since the 5-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain the team has been akin to the walking dead. Their mental state seems fractured, performances on the pitch have been poor, and they have set a historically bad precedent, losing five league games in a row without scoring for the first time in over a century.<\/p>\n

Rosenior is far from the problem at Chelsea as they near a fourth campaign out of five under Clearlake without Champions League football, but he hasn’t been able tp paper over the cracks of an already incomplete squad.<\/p>\n

What Now For the Blues?<\/h3>\n

An interim manager is likely to see out the rest of the term with not much left to compete for in the league and an FA Cup triumph not looking very likely given who stands in their way. Who comes in next is anyone’s guess, the club have a hard task on their hands having seen Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca both part ways with the project as the more lenient coaches have ultimately failed to live up to standards.<\/p>\n

Some from their recent search may be considered again but with the tumultuous recent history and obvious flaws with the recruitment it would be hard to entice a highly touted young manager like Cesc Fabregas to take this job. With elite candidates likely ruled out, the decision becomes much harder for the sporting directors to make.<\/p>\n
