The Black Cats have happy memories in recent times at St.James’ Park and are unbeaten in their last five visits to their bitter rivals. Whether they can extend that run remains to be seen; however, ahead of one of football’s fiercest derbies, one steeped in history and intensity, we take a look back at seven of the best Sunderland victories at Newcastle that gave their fans so much joy and brought many tears to the Toon.

Read More: Top Five Sunderland Goals vs Newcastle

A Look Back at Seven of the Best Sunderland Victories at Newcastle Ahead of the Tyne-Wear Derby

Newcastle 1-9 Sunderland, 1908

56,000 turned up at St.James’ Park on December 5th 1908, and they witnessed a one-sided exhibition match, especially in the second half. After 45 minutes, the game was evenly poised at 1-1, and no one would have guessed what was about to happen. Maybe the Sunderland manager was not happy at halftime and demanded better, maybe the Magpies got complacent. Whatever it was, the Black Cats were relentless after the break.

Sunderland scored eight goals in 28 second-half minutes before going easy on their hosts, who were chasing shadows at best. This was and still is Sunderland’s record league win. And what a place to do it.

Newcastle 1-4 Sunderland, 1979

Promotion-chasing Sunderland travelled the short distance into the lion’s den and produced a dominating display, and a performance from a player that will forever be talked about. Just five minutes had passed when Gary Rowell put Sunderland ahead, and he would double the score before halftime to give his side a comfortable lead at the break.

Newcastle pulled a goal back, but then conceded a penalty, which Rowell calmly scored from in front of the Magpies fans. The boyhood Sunderland fan was living his dream and those of every Black Cats fan as he celebrated his hat-trick against the enemy. A fourth goal followed, assisted by Rowell to put the game beyond doubt.

Rowell spoke about the game at a later date: “When we hit the fourth, I had a chat with Kevin Arnott about whether to try for a fifth or just to take the piss. We decided to take the piss.”

Gary Rowell sadly passed away last year, just before the derby at the Stadium of Light, a game which Sunderland won. A club legend and one of only three players to have scored more than 100 goals for the club since World War Two.

Newcastle 0-2 Sunderland, 1990

Newcastle went into this game as the favourites following a 0-0 draw at Roker Park in the first leg of the playoff semi-final in 1990. However, Sunderland had very different ideas and were there to spoil the party and book their place at Wembley.

Eric Gates gave the Black Cats a first-half lead, and as the game wore on, the home side began desperately looking for a goal. It created opportunities for Sunderland to break, and in Gates and Marco Gabbiadini, known as the G-Force, they had the perfect duo to make the Magpies pay.

Gates played an inch-perfect pass through to his strike partner Gabbiadini, who calmly placed his shot into the far corner of the goal and beyond the keeper to send the Sunderland fans behind the goal wild. The Newcastle fans made a desperate attempt to get the game called off by invading the pitch; however, once order was restored, the final moments of the game were played out, much to the delight of Sunderland and their fans, and annoyance of those in Black and White.

Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland, 1999

On a wet August night when the rain did not stop, Sunderland were up for another fierce battle in treacherous conditions. However, the occasion appeared to be getting to some at Newcastle before a ball was kicked. Magpie manager at the time, Ruud Gullit, who was under serious pressure after collecting just one point and conceding 11 goals in their opening four games, dropped striker and captain Alan Shearer and also his strike partner Duncan Ferguson.

Newcastle took a first-half lead in what was a frantic game despite the conditions; however, they were known for their defensive frailties, and few bet on them keeping a clean sheet. Niall Quinn equalised with a typical headed finish, and just after Gullit sent on Shearer, Kevin Phillips put the Black Cats in front with a swerving lob from an almost impossible angle to beat the United keeper. Sunderland once again had bragging rights.

Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland, 2000

For the second time in a year, the Black Cats came home with all three points. Once again, Sunderland came from behind to win, and this time had the satisfaction of watching Alan Shearer have his penalty saved and bring tears to the Toon.

It was another pulsating game with the Magpies intent on getting revenge for the game in 1999, and when Gary Speed gave United an early lead, some fans got their hopes up. However, that’s the way it stayed until the 68th min despite chances for both teams. Striker Kevin Phillips turned provider when his left-wing cross was met by Don Hutchinson, and his shot gave the United keeper no chance.

Sunderland were now the team looking most likely to win as they surged forward. With 14 minutes remaining, an excellent team move was finished off by a towering Niall Quinn header that looped beyond the reach of the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

With five minutes remaining, United were handed a lifeline when given a penalty. Shearer took the spot kick, but it was brilliantly saved by keeper Thomas Sorensen to send Magpie fans away from the ground having experienced another derby defeat.

Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland, 2013

Sunderland, with new manager Paolo di Canio in charge, were desperate for a positive result as they battled against relegation. It was the Italian’s second game in charge, and despite the Magpies also struggling in the league, few were expecting the result that came. Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring on 27 minutes when he drove at the United defence and shot into the bottom corner.

Newcastle responded, and the Black Cats had to weather the storm and had keeper Simon Mignolet to thank on several occasions for keeping their lead intact. United continued to threaten in the second half, but it was Sunderland that scored again. It was this goal that brought the famous celebrations from Di Canio, who slid Mourinho-esque down the touchline.

Sunderland were now in full control of the game and finished off their hosts with a third goal. David Vaughan scored with a rocket of a shot into the top corner to secure a vital three points.

Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland, 2014

It was deja vu at St.James Park as Sunderland, once again, were fighting in a relegation battle and once again, a 3-0 victory against their rivals in their own backyard eased their fears.

A Fabio Borini penalty made it 1-0, and soon after, they doubled their lead, silencing the home crowd as the away end erupted.

The Magpies rallied, but could find no way through the Sunderland defence or their keeper, Vito Mannone. With the game in its latter stages, the Black Cats scored a third to once again secure back-to-back away victories at St James’s park and their third derby win in a row.

Newcastle were poor, Sunderland were excellent, and no one could argue that the result was not correct or deserved

Read More: Top Five Sunderland Games vs Newcastle at The Stadium of Light

Featured image courtesy of IMAGO / Colorsport

Sunderland travel to Newcastle this Sunday for the Tyne-Wear Derby for the first time in 10 years.
