Carrick commented on this, saying, “Even though it’s the same players, game to game we have tweaked things, some of the front players have changed in different positions.”

Senne Lammens has cemented his place in goal, and after a man-of-the-match performance against Everton, he will be full of confidence heading into this one.

Monday night’s fixture saw a change to the back line for the first time since Carrick took charge, with Lenny Yoro coming in to replace the injured Lisandro Martinez. This change shifted Harry Maguire to left centre back, next to Luke Shaw. Carrick said, “Mason’s getting closer, he’s on the grass. Just have to be patient, really, make sure he’s ready for a big end to the season.”

The news concerning Matthijs de Ligt is largely the same as it has been for several weeks. When discussing the Dutchman, Carrick stated: “He’s had a back issue that’s been slow to progress. We’re getting there, it’s in the right direction, but just further behind.” He went on to say, “It’s part of football, unfortunately, so we’ll get him back when we can. It’s just the nature of the issue, really. It’s a difficult one to pin down a timeline. He’s definitely improving, so we’re just working towards that really. I can’t give you more at this stage.”

Carrick gave a brief update on the injury that kept Lisandro Martinez out of the Everton match.
