Whilst not all live up to the hype, many do. For every Federico Macheda who didn’t quite make it, you have a Gary Neville, who captained the side to multiple titles and has become a club legend.

One such player making a huge splash amongst fans and the club alike is 15-year-old JJ Gabriel. A goal machine already, the attacker is exciting, dynamic and is expected to make the first team sooner rather than later.

Let’s look at JJ Gabriel and what makes him such an exciting prospect.

Wonderkid on the Wing: JJ Gabriel Scouting Report

Profile

JJ Gabriel operates in any and all attacking positions. As either a left winger, attacking midfielder or centre forward, Gabriel has been electric in every position he’s been deployed in for the Manchester United under-18s. With a background in futsal, Gabriel’s technique on the ball is rivalled by very few at his age.

He’s shone in one-on-one situations, is full of flair and backs himself when taking on a defender. The youngster has been efficient when he can isolate a defender, something that could become vital when he takes the step up to the first team. He occupies multiple opposition players due to his ability to retain possession, which opens space for teammates to prosper in, a desirable trait for any team.

Dubbed ‘Kid Messi’ online, Gabriel’s stats show just how talented he is and why he’s destined for a first team opportunity soon.

JJ Gabriel Stats

After being in and around academies such as Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham, JJ Gabriel made the choice to begin his career at Manchester United.

He made his under-18s debut at just 14 years old. In his first six games for the under-18s, Gabriel notched seven goals and one assist. This included a brace, a hat-trick and a goal against United’s city rivals in a 4-2 loss.

Read More: Wonderkids You Haven’t Heard of Yet: Shea Lacey (Manchester United)

Following this blistering start, he’s recorded a further seven goals and an assist, including a hat-trick against Liverpool in a 7-0 win, another goal against Manchester City and a brace against Wolves. These are just Gabriel’s league stats; his FA Youth Cup stats are as impressive. In three games, Gabriel has found the back of the net twice and was influential in United’s 4-1 victory over Oxford’s under-18s.

With 16 goals in 21 appearances during his youth career, he’s a prospect that could be hard to keep hold of for United.

Michael Carrick admitted that, had The Red Devils been in the FA Cup, Gabriel could have received a first-team call-up to a match day squad. Gabriel has been called up to first team training on a number of occassions, showing just how highly the United interim boss thinks of him.

The 15-year-old has represented England six times at under 15 level and has three appearances for the under-16s.

Playing Style

JJ Gabriel is still just 15 and can’t be rushed into first-team men’s football. The Premier League rules state that a player must have celebrated their 15th birthday on or before August 31st of the current season. Unfortunately for the United youngster, he only turned 15 in October, meaning that he’s ineligible to play for the first team this season.

At 15, of course, he has a lot of natural growing to do, which is where he’ll likely struggle when he does make his first team debut. He’s slight in build, unlike a player like Wayne Rooney, who adapted to the men’s game quickly at 16 due to his stockier frame. With that being said, Gabriel’s style isn’t a boisterous style that relies on him barging defenders out of the way, he’s more technical and dynamic.

Read More: Harry Kane Hits Big Milestone. Where is he amongst England’s legends?

Comparisons can be seen with Neymar. His technical ability can be compared to that of young Brazilian players who grew up playing on the beach. He has close ball control, the ability to beat a player and change his angle at blistering speed. Neymar, in his prime, thrived on taking on players, getting past them and whipping the ball into the net. Gabriel can emulate that, but must stay disciplined during this stage of his career.

He can’t get carried away with his goalscoring prowess when he makes his first team debut. No one likes a greedy player who shoots from low xG positions. With that being said, whoever is the Manchester United manager next season cannot risk dampening his flair or putting a ceiling on someone who looks to be an elite talent.

Remember the name JJ Gabriel. He will, without a doubt, be in and around the Manchester United first team next season, something all Manchester United fans are extremely excited about.

Featured Image Credit:

IMAGO / Propaganda Photo

Manchester United have a history of nurturing young talent.
