Both teams come into the game full of confidence. The Gunners secured their place in the Carabao Cup final by defeating rivals Chelsea in the semifinals. The Black Cats moved up to eighth in the Premier League on Monday night when they easily defeated Burnley 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mikel Merino remains unavailable with a foot injury, but Jurrien Timber will return to the squad despite missing training on Thursday morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mikel Arteta gave an update on his only other injury worries, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. The pair missed the win against Chelsea in midweek but are close to a return. The Gunners boss said in his press conference<\/a> ahead of the game, “His (Saka) hip is getting much better, hopefully very soon he will be with us; very soon. Martin again is getting better, it will be a matter of days we believe.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunderland Team News<\/h3>\n

Granit Xhaka misses the trip to his old club. He is recovering from an ankle injury, but this game has come too soon for him to feature. Bertrand Traore also misses out after being injured while on international duty at AFCON.<\/p>\n

New signing Melker Ellborg should take a place on the bench. The 22-year-old keeper signed last Sunday from Malm\u00f6 FF and replaces Anthony Patterson, who has moved to Millwall on loan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Head Coach Regis Le Bris gave an update on his other winter window signing, Nilson Angulo, who joined from Anderlecht on deadline day.
