Marti Cifuentes has now left his post as City boss after just five months, with Andy King becoming interim manager. The tumultuous last few years seem to be continuing as the East Midlands’ side continues to close in on a return to League One.

To add to the misery, new reports suggest further transfer restrictions. This, of course, isn’t ideal due to the turmoil the club is currently in and the need for fresh faces to improve the starting eleven. The chances of finding suitable profiles with days left of the winter transfer window seem more and more unlikely.

Leicester City Set To Explore The Loan Market Due To Financial Constraints

PSR Battle Continues

As reported by John Percy, City are only able to sign players on loan this January transfer window. Despite being 25 days into the window, City have had very few credible links to any players, which is already a sign of the issues. For a squad struggling to this extent, and that may even be dragged into a relegation battle, it’s clear to see that the lack of business is due to an underlying issue. This issue remains the Profit and Sustainability rules, which continue to haunt them.

Read More: PSR Expert Reveals All On ‘Odd’ Leicester Trial

Ever since 2021, the Foxes have had complications with complying with the rules. Of course, this eventually led to relegation from the Premier League, as their one addition in the summer of 2022 was Wout Faes. Although last season, they escaped punishment for the 2022/23 season, the following two campaigns could still have major ramifications. There is an expectation that a decision over the ongoing case will soon come, as it could have a major effect on the league table.

The lack of fees spent on players has been an ongoing issue for the past few windows. Since the summer of 2024, just one player has come in for a fee, which was Woyo Coulibaly. The full-back played just four league games, one of which was a start, which perhaps shows that the people buying players are also out of their depth. Since then, only loanees and free agents have made the move to King Power Stadium. This includes Jordan James, Aaron Ramsey, Julian Carranza, and Asmir Begovic. The deals came with varying success as James has been excellent, but Ramsey has suffered with injuries, whilst Carranza left after just a few months.

How Does This Affect Leicester City’s Transfer Window

To many City supporters, this negative news is no surprise. The business done in the last few seasons has been nowhere near good enough, and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change. Being able to only bring players till the end of the season shows the lack of a long-term plan and perhaps other, more major underlying issues. King Powers and Aiywatt have come under a great deal of scrutiny, and it seems to be becoming more apparent that he is out of his depth.

Read More: Evaluating Leicester Centre-Back Options Following Wout Faes’ Departure

Whether it be financial issues such as a lack of cash flow or struggling to comply with the rules, it seems City are in an awful position. The supporter apathy also stems from the lack of movement behind the scenes, with John Rudkin remaining a key figurehead within the club. Leicester is getting back to its days of being well-run, and the envy of Europe seems far from gone, as they gear up for a relegation battle in the second tier.

In terms of this fight to remain in the Championship, they will need to find suitable players in the transfer market. Players who can hit the ground running and immediately be an improvement on the current crop. Finding midfield replacements could be imporant follwoign Jordan James’ month-long injury. In addition to this, a new number nine also has to be at the forefront of plans due to Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka’s evident struggles. However, with the days ticking down and little movement, it’s hard to imagine they will find the right replacements to make a difference.

Featured image courtesy of IMAGO / Pro Sports

Following an eleventh defeat of the season, Leicester City’s news goes from bad to worse.
