On Tuesday morning, Oxford United<\/a> made the decision to sack head coach, Gary Rowett.<\/p>\n

The 51-year-old was appointed last December and helped secure the club’s second-tier status for another season.<\/p>\n

However, with the U’s languishing in the bottom three with just four wins from 22, the club made the decision to make a change.<\/p>\n

Club Statement<\/h3>\n

Chairman, Grant Ferguson, said<\/a>: \u201cGary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark (Sale) for their contribution to the football club and to wish them all the best for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process to appoint a new head coach is already underway and the Club will provide an update in due course.<\/p>\n

In the interim, Craig Short will lead first-team preparations alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price.<\/p>\n

Rowett Record<\/h3>\n

Rowett was in charge for 50 games and started off well with just one defeat in his opening ten matches.<\/p>\n

There was a dip in form but wins over Sheffield United and Sunderland secured their Championship status for another campaign.<\/p>\n

However, this season just hasn’t got going, with just two points from their opening five games and a heavy defeat at home against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.<\/p>\n

The U’s haven’t picked up back-to-back wins this season, and despite credible results against some of the top teams in Coventry, Middlesbrough and Ipswich, it’s the results and performances against the struggling sides that have ultimately cost him his job.<\/p>\n
