They haven’t played each other since 2017, but now that Sunderland are back in the Premier League, that changes on Saturday, October 25. Both clubs are currently on 14 points from their first eight games, and this game could prove tough for both teams. However, Sunderland have nothing to fear as they head to London, and we take a look back at just five memorable Sunderland games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Read More: Latest Injury and Team News Ahead of Chelsea vs Sunderland on October 25

Five Memorable Sunderland Games Against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea 2-3 Sunderland: 1985 League Cup Semi-Final Second Leg

Two goals from striker Colin West at Roker Park meant Sunderland took a two-goal advantage into the second leg at Stamford Bridge. The Blues took an early lead through David Speedie, but the Black Cats restored their advantage later in the half through ex-Chelsea star Clive Walker.

Midway through the second half, Walker scored again to give Sunderland the lead on the night and a 4-1 aggregate lead. Violence off the pitch from those in the home ends threatened to stop the game, especially when Colin West made it 3-1, finding the net despite invading Chelsea fans. Chelsea scored a consolation, but the victory was Sunderland’s, and over the two legs deserved to be heading to the final.

Sadly, the news was not about Sunderland’s achievements but all about the Chelsea fans who brought shame on their club and the game of football.

Chelsea 1-1 Sunderland: 1992 FA Cup Semifinal

John Byrne, who scored in every game of this cup run but the final, was once again the hero as Second Division Sunderland earned a well-deserved draw at top-flight side Chelsea, managed by former Sunderland FA Cup hero Ian Porterfield.

Clive Allen gave the favourites a first-half lead, but this was anything but one-way traffic. Sunderland matched their opponents in every department and deservedly scored a second-half equaliser when John Byrne scored a well-placed header to secure a replay.

The replay was a classic under the Roker Park floodlights as the Black Cats won 2-1 to book their semifinal place.

Chelsea 2-4 Sunderland: 2001, Premier League

The Black Cats enjoyed a deserved win at Stamford Bridge but had to come from behind to claim the three points. Sunderland dominated the early stages of the game but found themselves behind following Marcel Desailly’s close-range header. A brilliant volley from Don Hutchinson levelled the scores, but it was the Blues who went into halftime with the lead thanks to Eidur Gudjohnsen.

However, Sunderland came out for the second half in a determined mood, and it came as no surprise when Hutchinson scored the equaliser once again seven minutes after the break. Midfielder Gavin McCann put the visitors in front for the first time with a cool finish, and then striker Kevin Phillips capitalised after Chelsea made a hash of a backpass to round off an excellent display and result.

Chelsea 0-3 Sunderland: 2010, Premier League

Sunderland overwhelmed their hosts as they left Stamford Bridge with a deserved three-nil victory. The Black Cats’ strike duo of Asamoha Gyan and Danny Welbeck caused havoc, but it was defender Nedum Onuoha who would open the scoring. He danced past several defenders on a mazy forward run and scored to put his team in front at halftime.

Sunderland’s onslaught continued in the second half, and it was no surprise when their lead was doubled through a clinical strike from Gyan. Chelsea had no answer to the Black Cats’ work rate, and Danny Welbeck completed the rout late on for their first victory at the Bridge since 2001.

Chelsea 1-2 Sunderland: 2014, Premier League

If anyone was going to do it at Stamford Bridge, then it would be Sunderland. They had surprised their hosts on several occasions in the past, and on this day the visitors inflicted Blues boss Jose Mourinho’s first defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Sunderland were battling for their lives at this stage of the season and were determined to produce one of the Premier League’s greatest escapes from relegation. A draw at Manchester City in midweek had given Gus Poyet’s men confidence, and it showed, despite falling behind after just 12 minutes. Six minutes late, Connor Wickham equalised. Chelsea pressed for a winner, but Vito Mannone in the Sunderland goal was in fine form, much to the annoyance of Mourinho.

On 80 minutes, Sunderland were awarded a penalty, which former Chelsea striker Fabio Borini dispatched with ease. The result put a huge dent in Chelsea’s title hopes and gave a huge boost to Sunderland’s survival efforts, in which they would eventually be successful.

Featured image courtesy of IMAGO / Sportimage

Chelsea and Sunderland have faced each other 125 times through the years, with the Blues winning 61 and the Black Cats 42.
