While some got to stay at Cobham and rest there were others that went out and stole the show, both at senior level and at Under-21 level. In this, I will be looking at every single name who went on international duty and look at how well they performed.

Catching Up on Every Chelsea Player on International Duty

Enzo Fernandez

While some may be under the illusion that the midfielder didn’t play at all after being sent back early with an injury, he did actually take to the field during a 1-0 win over Venezuela. Fernandez started and played 78 minutes before being withdrawn for Alexis Mac Allister.

Read More: The Worrying Numbers Behind Joao Pedro’s Goal Drought

He was his usual self, making 102 of 112 passes, completing one key pass in a tight game before being subbed off without a goal or assist to his name.

Filip Jorgensen

Was called up to the Denmark squad as part of the goalkeeping core but didn’t get any minutes. Veteran stopper Kasper Schmeichel continues to stand in the way of the former Villarreal man.

Marc Cucurella

Marc Cucurella started in Spain’s 2-0 win over Georgia in the left-back spot. He made two interceptions, two clearances, and won both ground duels. Despite playing as a left-back he made three key passes and created one big chance. He successfully completed 68 of 75 passes.

Read More: Best Chelsea Players to Wear the Number 16 Jersey Ever

After playing the full 90 in that one he was rested for a 4-0 win over Bulgaria and didn’t get on the field, something that many Blues fans will be thankful for.

Estevao

Carlo Ancelotti’s revamped attack brought out the best side of the teenager in the first friendly of the break. The teenager dominated against South Korea, scoring two goals from his only two shots. A change in system saw him rested against Japan as the Selecao lost 3-2.

The Chelsea man got 15 minutes off the bench against Japan and looked like a bright spark, creating one big chance, completing every pass attempt, making three forward dribbles as he looked to get his side back into it.

Pedro Neto

Pedro Neto started both matches for Portugal as they first struggled to break down a resilient Republic of Ireland unit. He made four key passes and 10 crosses as he provided a constant threat on the right flank before coming off at the hour mark for Rafael Leao.

Read More: Best Chelsea Players to Wear the Number 15 Jersey Ever

He once again started against Hungary, making one key pass and completing 35 of 36 attempted passes. He won a number of ground duels in another energetic performance despite the match ending in a draw.

Malo Gusto

Malo Gusto actually got a start for France as he was the right-back against Azerbaijan. He put in an attacking display with Olise to play off of, spending a lot of time in the opposition half. He was a useful player all night, making the majority of his passes, winning his few dribbles, and recovering possession on five seperate occasions.

He was an unused substitute a few days later against Iceland as Les Bleus drew 2-2.

Under-21s

Jamie Gittens

It was an exciting two weeks for the former Borussia Dortmund man who looked back to his finest. He scored a goal in the first clash against Moldova, attempting twelve dribbles, putting in five crosses. With 66 touches he was a constant presence and a pest in the press with two interceptions and two ball recoveries.

He followed that up with an even better performance as he set up the winner against Andorra. He made five key passes, created three big chances, three accurate crosses, had 68 touches, completed five of eight dribbles, and won seven of 13 ground duels.

Tyrique George

The beneficiary of Gittens’ assist, Tyrique George’s ball striking once again proved to be his best trait as he smashed home the winner against Andorra. He lead the line very capably, getting on the ball and making the right passes consistently and getting shots away.

Enzo Maresca Tactical Evolution at Chelsea

He was less effective in the first match of the international break but made up for it with his game winner in the second.

Josh Acheampong

Josh Acheampong started in the centre of the defence against Moldova and looked like a rock at the back. He made six recoveries, three clearances, and won two of four aerial duels. More baffling is he completed 100% of his passes out from the back, making 66 of 66 passes, the team played high enough that 40 of those were registered in the opposition half.

Four of his passes were long balls, his 75 touches showed a composure as he was spraying the ball around and didn’t lose possession a single time across the 78-minute appearance.

Marc Guiu

A familiar tale for young Marc Guiu as he was called up to the Spain Under-21 squad but didn’t get to come off the bench in a 4-1 win over Norway. He has the unfortunate task of unseating Real Madrid’s Club World Cup breakout name Gonzalo Garcia. He was then left out of the squad for the Finland clash.

Featured Image Credit

IMAGO / Colorsport
Football – 2024 / 2025 Premier League – Crystal Palace vs Chelsea – Selhurst Park – Saturday 4th January 2025 Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca consoles Pedro Neto at the final whistle PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxUK

The international break saw a chance for Chelsea players to spread their wings and head off to their nations.
