While they weren’t as effective in the final third, the attacking midfield trio caused plenty of problems for the Blades backline, particularly the wingers.

De Keersmaecker and Brannagan also controlled large spells in the middle of the park but despite their first half dominance, they were unable to find the back of the net and were limited to few clear cut chances.

However, after the restart, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder clearly got a message across to his players and the U’s looked a shell of the side compared to the opening 45 minutes.

The Blades were by far the better side and once they took the lead on 64 minutes, they sat deep and stopped Oxford from getting in behind.

Ultimately, if the U’s had taken the lead when they were in control of the game, it could have been a different outcome on the day.

Wrong Subs, Wrong Time

The second half display wasn’t helped by the changes that Rowett made, which highlighted a slight lack of depth with options coming off the bench.

While Lankshear arguably had his worst display in an Oxford shirt, but that was down to the experience of Ben Mee, Mark Harris barely got a sniff after replacing him, although Stan Mills did have a go after he replaced Placheta.

Siriki Dembele and Will Vaulks also came on but with Prelec and Krastev departing, the U’s lost that creative spark in the final third.

In hindsight, Rowett could have tweaked the team before Sheffield United took the lead and it could have been a different outcome.

Oxford United saw their unbeaten run come to an end with a narrow defeat at home against Sheffield United.
