{"id":658898,"date":"2025-08-31T15:37:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T19:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=658898"},"modified":"2025-08-31T15:37:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T19:37:20","slug":"oxford-united-brighton-cup-coventry-draw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2025\/08\/31\/oxford-united-brighton-cup-coventry-draw\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Brighton Battering and Coventry Draw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a mixed week for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2025\/08\/31\/three-talking-points-oxford-united-draw-coventry\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a> as the U&#8217;s lost by a big scoreline in the Carabao Cup before picking up their first point of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, some of Gary Rowett&#8217;s squad have been called up for international duty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2025\/08\/31\/three-talking-points-oxford-united-draw-coventry\/\" target=\"_self\">Three Talking Points as Oxford United Draw Against Coventry<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Carabao Cup Exit and Point Against Coventry<\/h2>\n<h3>Brighton Batter the U&#8217;s in the Cup<\/h3>\n<p>On Wednesday, Oxford suffered their heaviest ever defeat in the League Cup as Gary Rowett&#8217;s side lost 6-0 at home against Brighton.<\/p>\n<p>Defensively, the U&#8217;s struggled from start to finish, conceding twice in the first half and a further four after the restart.<\/p>\n<p>However, Oxford did look more threatening in front of goal but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping meant the U&#8217;s could not find the back of the net themselves.<\/p>\n<h3>Harris Called Up to Wales Squad<\/h3>\n<p>U&#8217;s striker Mark Harris was called up to represent Wales in their upcoming international fixtures against Kazakhstan and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Wales make the trip to Kazakhstan for a World Cup qualifier before welcoming Canada in an international friendly.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Dragons sit second in their group on seven points but beat Kazakhstan at the Cardiff City Stadium on matchday one.<\/p>\n<h3>More Call-Ups<\/h3>\n<p>On Friday, there was a flurry of international call-ups with three U&#8217;s players being selected.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, on loan midfielder Luke Harris was called up to represent Wales U21s in their Euro U21 Qualifier against Denmark, before Will Lankshear was selected for England&#8217;s U21 squad for their clash in the same competition against Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Greg Leigh was announced as part of Steve McClaren&#8217;s Jamaica side to face Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Jon Clarke to Depart Oxford United<\/h3>\n<p>Stadium Development Director Jonathon Clarke made the decision to leave the club on Friday following the club&#8217;s approval for a new stadium.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.oufc.co.uk\/news\/development-director-jonathon-clarke-leave-oxford-united\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reflecting on his time at the club, Clarke said:<\/a> &#8220;It\u2019s been an absolute privilege to help guide Oxford United through such a transformative period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With planning approval now secured, I\u2019m confident that the team in place are the best people to take this project forward into its next phase. I leave knowing the future of the stadium is in excellent hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oxford United Chief Executive Officer, Tim Williams, added: \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly grateful to Jon for everything he\u2019s done over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His work has laid the foundation for the club\u2019s future, and thanks to his input, we have a plan in place to deliver the next stage of this landmark project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>First Point of the Season<\/h3>\n<p>On Saturday, Oxford picked up their first point of the season with an entertaining 2-2 draw against high-flyers Coventry.<\/p>\n<p>The U&#8217;s came from behind twice against Frank Lampard&#8217;s side.
