After registering a record low Premier League points total (42) and goals total (44) in the 2024\/2025 season, there is significant room for improvement for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United heading into the new campaign. The Red Devils, bolstered by a significant outlay on new signings Matheus Cunha<\/a>, Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko,<\/a> and Diego Leon, will be required to raise levels in all areas if they aspire to challenge in the top half of the table and not limp in 15th place come May. How to Find the Net<\/h3>\n

It would seem that Amorim has addressed the Red Devils’ most pressing issue ahead of the new season: Buying players to improve United’s fortunes in front of goal. Just 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season underlined the importance of good recruitment of forward players this summer, and the arrivals of Cunha (15 league goals and six assists), Mbuemo (20 goals and eight assists) and Sesko (13 goals, five assists) go a long way to allay fears of another offensive drought. With that being said, it remains to be seen how the new front three gel together, and it may be a few weeks before we see them combine to maximum effectiveness.<\/p>\n

Becoming More Solid in Midfield<\/h3>\n

A lot has been made of the Portuguese coach’s insistence on playing three at the back with players who were either ill-suited or lacking experience in the system, but many supporters will argue that central midfield was, and has been for over a decade, the main source of the Red Devil’s on-field malaise. Several potential solutions have come and gone, but the reality is that possibly the most important position on the field has been neglected since the halcyon days of Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes. Last season’s midfield consisted of the ageing, expensive, and declining Casemiro and the ever-willing yet technically lacking Manuel Ugarte, meaning that Amorim would be wise to step up United’s protracted pursuit of Brighton’s 21-year-old Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba<\/a> in the last weeks of the transfer window.<\/p>\n

Onana is Not the Answer<\/h3>\n

To characterise Andr\u00e9 Onana’s 2024\/25 season as error-strewn would be one of football’s biggest understatements. The Cameroon international goalkeeper, who excelled at Inter Milan and Ajax before arriving at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag in 2023, seems to have lost all confidence in both his shot-stopping and, crucially because it was the reason why he was recruited, his ball distribution skills. Although the need for a replacement is pressing, backup Altay Bayindir has been shown to be unlikely to step up to the plate as a number one, and the summer transfer budget is unlikely to stretch to replace Onana unless further revenues are generated through sales.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
