But despite Tottenham Hotspur having a first option in place to buy the star, the latest update from Fabrizio Romano suggests he&#8217;ll be staying in Spain for his next move.<\/p>\n<h2>Spurs to Lose out as Jonny Cardoso Agrees Personal Terms with Atletico Madrid<\/h2>\n<h3>The Latest on Cardoso Transfer<\/h3>\n<p>Cardoso only recently extended his contract with Betis in February until 2030. He has been an important player for the Spanish club, making 28 La Liga appearances while scoring three goals and getting one assist. The American even started in the UEFA Conference League final.<\/p>\n<p>But the latest reports suggest that he has agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid and the talks are now advancing to complete a deal with Real Betis. The current offer stands at around \u00a325 million or \u20ac30 million.<\/p>\n<p>Fabrizio Romano <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FabrizioRomano\/status\/1930622853092684269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>: &#8220;Atl\u00e9tico Madrid have reached an agreement with Johnny Cardoso on personal terms and advancing in talks to get deal done with Real Betis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Package deal around \u20ac30m with bonuses and also potential players as part of the agreement now being discussed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, fellow Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has described Cardoso as <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MatteMoretto\/status\/1930378036752592932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of Diego Simeone&#8217;s &#8216;main targets&#8217;<\/a> [translated] to strengthen his midfield. He has also affirmed that Cardoso remains a &#8216;very important player&#8217; for Betis and that there will be &#8216;no quick negotiation&#8217; for the transfer fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2025\/06\/01\/tottenham-hotspur-ange-postecoglou-thomas-frank\/\" target=\"_self\">&#8216;Progressive&#8217; Replacement &#8216;Appreciated&#8217;: Tottenham Hotspur to Make Decision on Ange Postecoglou<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What Happened to the Tottenham Cardoso Deal<\/h3>\n<p>Originally, Spurs agreed to have the first option to sign Cardoso for a fee of around \u00a321 million which came about as part of the Giovani Lo Celso deal.<\/p>\n<p>Spurs&#8217; first option has a specific <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/football\/2024\/09\/03\/tottenham-johnny-cardoso-real-betis-option-giovani-lo-celso\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-week window<\/a> in which to buy the player<\/p>\n<p>But even if Spurs choose not to go ahead with the transfer, the club are meant to have a sell-on clause of around 20%.<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso previously <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.football.london\/tottenham-hotspur-fc\/transfer-news\/johnny-cardoso-discusses-tottenham-transfer-31295380\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revealed in March<\/a> that he felt boosted by Tottenham&#8217;s interest, but at the time, he affirmed his commitment to Betis.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI can\u2019t lie, and it\u2019s true that it\u2019s something that gives me confidence, that makes me feel valued because I\u2019m doing a good job&#8230;However, right now my focus is only on Betis. This season we have important things to think about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it currently stands, Tottenham have not activated the first option to sign Cardoso.
