How Newcastle Have Lined Up Recently<\/h3>\n

Nick Pope is first-choice goalkeeper when fit. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are undroppable as centre-backs with Sven Botman filling in as the third centre-back when needed. Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento were the full-backs of choice but a recent switch to having wing-backs has allowed Jacob Murphy to play on the right flank as a wing-back.<\/p>\n

Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have played in the centre of midfield, initially as a trio with Joelinton or Joe Willock but the recent formation change has made them a pairing. Ahead of them as inside forwards, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes support Callum Wilson up front, who has deputized for Alexander Isak during his injury.<\/p>\n

Howe used a 4-3-3 pretty much for the entire season but recent injuries to Trippier, Joelinton and Isak have forced him to shift into a 3-4-2-1 system kind of like Ruben Amorim. This formation switch allows him to keep the balance by having Murphy on the right flank. With how the team plays and presses in the 4-3-3 the full-backs have to be very active so a wing-back is a decent replacement with a wide centre-back covering on defense. Recent results have been quite mixed with absentees and the formation switch adding to the understandable fatigue of a smaller squad. Defeats to Arsenal and Aston Villa and a draw with Brighton have seen them drop points more often than they’ve won in the last five. Strong wins over Chelsea and Ipswich do make things look better if they can continue to find the net without their talisman.<\/p>\n

Everything is up in the air for Howe as PremierInjuries<\/a> has his vague updates on some key names. Isak, Trippier, and Matt Targett haven’t been fully ruled out by the coach; the first two names haven’t trained but could end up being fit to play anyway. That risk might be worth taking if Champions League football is on the line. Lewis Hall and Joelinton are definitely out for the season.<\/p>\n
