It looked to have been a tough day for some of the players as their appearances will be assessed in this Leicester City loan report.

Leicester City Loan Report: Harry Souttar and Sheffield United Lose Streak

Harry Souttar – Sheffield United

The Australian international has been a mainstay for promotion-hopeful Sheffield United, who’ve been in fine form recently. Going into their clash with Burnley, The Blades sat top of the league, with their opposition in third and looking to narrow the gap to automatic promotion. Souttar played the full game as his side was defeated by Scott Parker’s visiting Burnley squad.

The game ended 2-0 to the away side, with both teams having chances and a similar amount of possession. Souttar’s backline conceded for the first time at Bramall Lane since August 17th, which marked the end to an impressive record. The centre-back had a decent game as he used his tall frame to dominate aerially; he won 6/8 aerial duels, whilst also being strong on the ball with 57 passes. However, this wasn’t enough as Burnley took all three points and Souttar didn’t manage to win any tackles and was dribbled past.

Tom Cannon – Stoke City

The 21-year-old attacker led the line for a struggling Stoke side that lost 2-0 at home to the new league leaders Leeds United. Cannon played all 90 minutes as his side were comprehensively defeated for the fifth time in their last six games, which led to the sacking of their second manager this season.

Read More: What Was Learnt from Oxford United’s Win over Cardiff

The forward had the least touches of any outfield player to play every minute, as he managed just seven passes completed and 5/11 aerial duels won. This is the harsh reality of the English Football League as a young striker as it can be tough to get on the ball and have chances against a dominant team like Leeds. It was overall a tough day for the Potters and Cannon as they look to fight relegation this season after a poor start.

Silko Thomas – Wigan Athletic

English winger Silko Thomas also starred this weekend as Wigan Athletic picked up a much-needed win against Rotherham. A quite even game saw Wigan as the visiting side edge out Rotherham for more possession and shots, whilst both sides had two big chances.

Thomas was a key part of the Tics’ attack as he created two chances and had two shots. The attacker is clearly looking to add to his tally of just two assists this season, but seems to be a driving force for his side in terms of build-up play and chance creation. The 20-year-old has started in 16 of Wigan’s games this season, which shows he is clearly trusted by the manager and will only be better with more experience. His side is in good form as of late with four wins in their last seven league games, which has seen them rise to 14th in the league.

Chris Popov- Barrow

Popov is a striker who excelled through the ranks of the Leicester City academy and even earned his debut for the first team this season in the Carabao Cup against Tranmere Rovers. Since then, he has been on loan at League Two side Barrow, where he has had limited game time thus far.

Read More: Past Leicester City Loan Report

Their boxing day fixture was a visit to Salford City. The game ended 3-0 to the home side as Popov came off the bench in the 67th minute when his side were two goals behind. Considering his lack of game time, he performed reasonably, creating a chance and having a shot. However, he seems to have struggled to get into the game as he made just four passes, which shows the importance of experience in the English Football League. The forward will be looking to keep on getting more minutes as he is still learning his trade in professional football.

Brandon Cover- Port Vale

Full-back Brandon Cover has been an important figure for promotion-hopeful Port Vale in League Two this season. The Jamaican International has started in 16 games this season and has helped his side to 2nd in the league. Their festive fixture was a trip to 10th-placed Bradford City, who beat them 2-1, despite having less possession and shots.

Cover once again operated as a right wing-back and had some joy as he made seven passes into the final third and had 40 touches. However, his influence wasn’t enough as he was subbed in the 67th minute due to his side needing a goal. Cover seems to have been one of his side’s key players as some of their fans want the deal to be made permanent. Despite this, it was still a tough day for the defender as he was dribbled past twice and only managed to make one tackle.

Leicester City’s loanees were once again in action this week with the Boxing Day fixtures being played.
