Why Are Bayern Interested in Extending With Neuer?<\/h3>\n

Despite the above-mentioned factors that would seem to be good arguments against a Neuer contract extension, it seems likely that there will be a new deal for the former longtime Germany captain.<\/p>\n

As Fabrizio Romano reported<\/a>, sporting CEO Max Eberl explained that both the player and the club would be happy for a deal to be done. Neuer has been at Bayern since he arrived in 2011 from Schalke 04. He has captained the Bavarian side since Philipp Lahm\u2019s 2017 retirement.<\/p>\n

It is easily arguable that the first-team “star”<\/a> was not only the best keeper in the world ten years ago, but probably the best of all time at his peak. Since then, he has worked incredibly hard to fight back against horrible injuries. Weaknesses have certainly crept into his game over the years, but he is still a solid keeper.<\/p>\n

No Suitable Alternative<\/h3>\n

A major reason why a Neuer contract extension is likely has much to do with Bayern not being able to find a suitable replacement for the long term. Whenever the time comes to replace such a legend, finding someone who can adequately fill his shoes is difficult.<\/p>\n

When Neuer had his awful skiing accident after the 2022 World Cup, the club signed Yann Sommer in the January transfer window, but the Swiss keeper was not as strong as many remembered Neuer, so Sommer was sold off to Inter the following summer.<\/p>\n

Even though it would probably be best to move on to a younger keeper, the Neuer contract extension is somewhat justifiable, because he is still quite solid, with six clean sheets in his 11 Bundesliga appearances so far this season for example.
