The journalist, who is heavily associated with the club, said “People aren’t aware of what the Sport City will mean for Atlético Madrid”. He went on to say that “It will bring revenues almost on par with FC Barcelona”.

The project, which had visual plans released earlier this year, has been in the pipeline ever since the team moved into the Estadio Metropolitano in 2017. Alongside it, there will be a mini stadium, training pitches, dormitories and high-performance facilities for the club’s men’s, women’s and academy teams to access.

Financial Freedom In The Markets

Los Colchoneros are starting to turn a financial corner that will, in theory at least, allow them to compete with the world’s richest clubs in the transfer market. Very recently, CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marin and President Enrique Cerezo signed a deal worth up to €300 million over nine years to rename the club’s stadium.

With the addition of the Sport City, Atleti’s monetary arsenal will be well stocked and ready to be deployed in the next transfer windows. Not only will it be able to offer other clubs higher sums to sign players but it will allow them to offer the players in question higher wages. They currently operate under a wage structure that only permits a few big earners in their squad.

Read More: Diego Simeone Makes Bold Defence Of Costly Atlético Madrid Error

This is speaking comparatively with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City who have asserted themselves as the most dominant and attractive forces in world football (among others).

Atlético Madrid have shown they can compete with these teams from a footballing point of view, winning two league titles and reaching two Champions League finals all in the last ten years. But now they want to show that off the pitch they are ready to go toe to toe with the giants of the game too.

It all started with the new stadium seven years ago. Along the way they have attempted to make other large investments with some turning out to be more fruitful than others (see João Felix). But now it appears the long-term financial sustainability of the club is being thought about with projects such as the Sport City being key to this.

A journalist associated with Atlético Madrid has revealed that their new Sports City will bring in revenue close to that of their La Liga rivals, FC Barcelona.
