{"id":646816,"date":"2024-09-29T13:45:51","date_gmt":"2024-09-29T17:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=646816"},"modified":"2024-09-29T13:45:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-29T17:45:51","slug":"oxford-united-des-buckingham-interview-burnley-draw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2024\/09\/29\/oxford-united-des-buckingham-interview-burnley-draw\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Des Buckingham Interview and Burnley Draw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another busy week for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2024\/09\/29\/three-talking-points-oxford-united-draw-burnley\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a> which included an exclusive interview with head coach Des Buckingham and a goalless draw against Burnley.<\/p>\n<h2>Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Des Buckingham Interview and Burnley Draw<\/h2>\n<h3>&#8216;I Can Never Say Never&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Des Buckingham has admitted that he had the opportunity to leave the club, when speaking on BBC Radio Oxford&#8217;s, &#8216;The Dub&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The U&#8217;s head coach has reportedly been linked with the Wales and Cardiff City job in the past months after guiding his hometown club to the Championship.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/24608640.des-buckingham-job-opportunities-leave-oxford-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He said<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s sometimes in my hands. I think I\u2019m sitting just under the top third of managers still in their jobs when I was appointed last November, which shows how volatile this career path can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I will say is that certainly since Wembley, I\u2019ve had the opportunity where other people were interested. They\u2019re not of interest to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can never say never, it\u2019s not the reality of the world we work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as you continually feel we\u2019re going in the right direction that we set out to, and you continually feel that you\u2019re wanted, and as long as we keep doing well in the first team space, then as long as I\u2019m happy, I\u2019m in a good space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably the best answer I can give to you without anything ever coming back to haunt me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very happy with what I\u2019m doing, I\u2019m leading my local club, there\u2019s been a chance to seek other things, which I\u2019m certainly not interested in right now, and it\u2019s making sure as long as you\u2019re wanted and you\u2019re enjoying your job, I\u2019m happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Injury Update<\/h3>\n<p>Continuing with his conversation on &#8216;The Dub&#8217;, Buckingham addressed the club&#8217;s injury concerns.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/24609167.oxford-united-injury-latest-burnley-match-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He said:<\/a> \u201cAt the moment, we\u2019ve got Shemmy [Przemyslaw Placheta], who picked up an injury in the first couple of games. He will be at least another four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe then lost Joe Bennett, and Joe we\u2019re expecting back at the start of January from an ankle injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatty Phillips had to come off against Preston, and we\u2019re still waiting for a timeframe for Matty at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCam [Brannagan] we\u2019re expecting in six weeks to come back, but that will all be dependent on a scan that will happen in three weeks, just to make sure that is progressing the way we\u2019re all expecting it to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJosh [McEachran] had to come off at the weekend with a groin issue, but it\u2019s hopefully something that is short-term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could be in contention for the weekend, but it\u2019s probably more likely the Luton game on the Tuesday, or if not, the Portsmouth game the week after.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Statement Against Burnley<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford remain unbeaten at home but dropped points at Grenoble Road for the first time this season.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was no shame in that as Des Buckingham&#8217;s side held Burnley to goalless draw.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors dominated possession and chances but it was a determined and disciplined display from the U&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another busy week for Oxford United which included an exclusive interview with head coach Des Buckingham and a goalless draw against Burnley.
