How Newcastle Have Lined-up Recently<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In their season opener against Southampton, Newcastle used a 4-3-3 formation, consistent with their pre-season system. However, the Magpies had to switch things up early <\/span>on<\/span> following Fabian <\/span>Schar\u2019s<\/span> red card.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emil Krafth replaced the defender, playing at centre-back alongside Dan Burn for the remainder of the match. Both played deeper positions than Schar, partly due to being a player down and partly because Joelinton had given them a lead to protect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joelinton was joined by Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff in the midfield three.<\/span> Howe opted for Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon as his wingers, whilst Alexander Isak led the line as expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newcastle\u2019s<\/span> Recent Form and Tactics<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Newcastle won their opening match 1-0, thanks to <\/span>Joelinton\u2019s<\/span> cool<\/span> finish on the stroke of half-time. However, this was <\/span>largely<\/span> due to an error by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in giving the ball away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the numerical disadvantage, <\/span>Newcastle\u2019s<\/span> defence remained resolute before a buoyant St <\/span>James\u2019s<\/span> Park. Lewis Hall and Valentino Livramento put <\/span>in<\/span> vital blocks to protect the clean sheet.<\/span><\/p>\n

This result built on a <\/span>strong<\/span> pre-season, where the Magpies won four out of five matches. Whilst they have a midweek fixture <\/span>coming up<\/span> \u2013 an EFL Cup match at Nottingham Forest \u2013 Eddie Howe will still look to field his <\/span>strongest<\/span> starting lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kieran Trippier is unlikely to be involved as he <\/span>is linked<\/span> with a\u00a0<\/span>move to Everton<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Howe\u2019s<\/span> defensive options are stretched thin, so Krafth <\/span>is likely to<\/span> start. Harvey Barnes and Lloyd Kelly were also used as <\/span>substitutes,<\/span> and so could have an outside chance of starting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Magpies are set for a busy end to the transfer window <\/span>as well<\/span>.<\/span> They are still shopping for a <\/span>centre-back,<\/span> and are\u00a0<\/span>exploring alternatives<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to Marc <\/span>Guehi,<\/span> after <\/span>a third bid for the Crystal Palace defender was rejected<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newcastle Injuries to Consider<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Schar joins Sandro Tonali on <\/span>Newcastle\u2019s<\/span> list of suspended players. He will miss the next three matches and will not return until after the international break. Tonali, on the other hand, could be back in time for <\/span>Newcastle\u2019s<\/span> clash against Tottenham on September 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Lewis Miley are all out with long-term injuries. The first two are out until <\/span>the end of<\/span>2024, but Miley could return in October. Matt Targett returned to training last week and could feature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Callum Wilson is nearing a return from a back injury but <\/span>is unlikely to<\/span> feature this weekend. Although he is<\/span> \u201c<\/span>making <\/span>really good<\/span> progres<\/span>s\u201d,<\/span> Howe is eager to<\/span> \u201c<\/span>manage his comeback<\/span>\u201d <\/span>after an injury-strewn year last season.<\/span><\/p>\n
