This morning, two days after the defeat to Spain in the European Championship final, Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Southgate managed the Three Lions for eight years, taking charge of 102 games. He guided the team to two European Championship<\/a> finals, a World Cup semi-final and a quarter-final.<\/p>\n

Speaking of his decision to resign, Gareth Southgate said<\/a>: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it\u2019s time for change, and for a new chapter. The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of.<\/p>\n

“We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I\u2019m an England fan and I always will be. I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.<\/p>\n

“Thank you, England \u2013 for everything.”<\/p>\n

“I joined the Football Association in 2011, determined to improve English football,” he added.<\/p>\n

“I hope we get behind the players and the team at St George\u2019s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change.”<\/p>\n

Gareth Southgate got England’s men’s team to within touching distance of winning their first major competition since 1966. He won 61 of his 102 games in charge of England<\/a>, drawing 24 and losing 17, leading the team to two finals, the 2020 and 2024 European Championships<\/a>, eventually being beaten by Italy and Spain. He led the Three Lions during two World Cups where they ended a semi-final and a quarter-final defeat.<\/p>\n
