How Mexico Have Lined Up Recently<\/span><\/h3>\n

Neither of Mexico boss Jaime Lozano’s two formations at Copa Am\u00e9rica have worked well. <\/span>He used a\u00a0<\/span>4-1-4-1<\/span><\/a>\u00a0formation in the 1-0 defeat to Venezuela and a 4-2-3-1 <\/span>previously,<\/span> against Jamaica.<\/span> El Tri’s <\/span>defence,<\/span> has, at least, looked pretty solid in the first two games.<\/span><\/p>\n

In both group games,<\/span> Mexico’s midfield and attack haven’t<\/span> been convincing<\/span>.<\/span> Despite \u00c1lvarez being out for the tournament, Lozano <\/span>does have<\/span> an experienced group of midfielders <\/span>to choose from<\/span>.<\/span> Luis Romo will continue as the defensive midfielder, and Dynamo Moscow’s Luis Ch\u00e1vez will also be in midfield in an expected 4-2-3-1 formation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Uriel Antuna may just about keep his place, with Orbel\u00edn Pineda given a start. Pineda will have the extra motivation to try and atone for his penalty miss against Venezuela. Lozano is nothing if not flexible with his tactics. His 4-1-4-1 formation against Venezuela <\/span>was likely influenced<\/span> by the injury to captain Edson \u00c1lvarez.<\/span><\/p>\n

The advantage of playing adaptable players such as Pineda and Vega is that Lozano can change his formation with the same personnel on the pitch. Pineda can drop into midfield <\/span>and<\/span> Vega can replace him out wide. Circumstances necessitate that Mexico must <\/span>attack,<\/span> whatever formation Lozano chooses. Because if Ecuador gain a <\/span>draw<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>they will qualify<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at El Tri’s expense.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mexico Injuries to Consider<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Mexican camp is still dominated by the injury to Edson <\/span>\u00c1lvarez,<\/span> and his being ruled out for the rest of the tournament.<\/span> Fortunately, for El Tri, there are no other serious injury concerns. <\/span>Lozano <\/span>does also have a lot of<\/span> like-for-like replacements when and if injuries do occur.<\/span> The one exception is \u00c1lvarez.<\/span><\/p>\n
