Marsch has played a 4-4-2 in all matches as Canada manager; a system that has seemed effective.

Maxime Crepeau started Canada’s most recent three matches, earning a clean sheet and a man-of-the-match performance against France and also started against Argentina, producing many saves. He was also the best-performing player in the first half against Peru. he has started three of the four matches under Marsch with Minnesota United’s Dayne St.Clair starting against the Netherlands in a 4-0 defeat in Feyenoord.

The back four has been the same since Biello was replaced. Alphonso Davies is the first-choice left-back who was named captain by Jesse Marsch. Davies will make his 50th international cap for Canada if he starts. Davies is currently linked with a transfer to Champions League holders Real Madrid, away from Bayern Munich where he has spent the past eight seasons. Moise Bombito and Derek Cornelius are the centre-back duo in Canada’s system. Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is a constant for the national team and made the most interceptions against Argentina.

Read More: Top Three Biggest Upsets in Copa América History

Liam Millar has continuously started at left midfield. He has usually been replaced late in matches by Toronto FC’s Jonathan Osario. This has been the case in both Copa America matches so far. FC Porto’s Stephen Eustaquio plays alongside Watford’s Ismeal Kone under Marsch’s system. Canada’s midfield is completed by Tajon Buchanan playing on the right. He was the most accurate passer in the match to play more than 45 minutes against Argentina.

Marsch prefers an upfront partnership of Mallorca’s Cyle Larin and Lille’s Jonathon David, with the latter scoring the decisive winner against Peru. Jonathon David made his 50th appearance for the Maple Leafs in their last match, scoring his 27th goal. His last goal came in May when he scored a brace for Lille against Nantes in Ligue 1. He has played every minute so far in the Copa America. The same cannot be said for Cyle Larin, who despite starting the last two games and creating promising chances, has not completed a full 90 minutes for Canada under Marsch as of yet. He has started 70 games for Canada, scoring 29 goals.

Recent Form

After Englishman John Herdman departed the Canadian national team for MLS Franchise Toronto FC, the Canadian national team were managed by interim manager and now assistant Mauro Biello. However, after failing to qualify for Copa America the first time of asking, the interim manager was replaced by American Jesse Marsch, who had previously had managerial experience in Canada, managing Montreal Impact (rebranded as CF Montreal) in 2012. Since his appointment, Canada has played four matches, including two in their first-ever Copa America, in which they won their first match in the tournament.

Read More : Canada vs Chile Predictions

Canada’s first match in the Copa America came in the opening match in Atlanta against World Champions and Copa America holders Argentina. Argentina had much better stats such as 64% possession, and an xG of 3.02 to Canada’s 1.16, however, the result and stats fail to reflect the opportunities Canada had and how they would consider the loss asdisappointing due to their wastefulness in front of goal.

Canada was arguably the better shot in the first half. Despite Argentina having 66% possession, Canada had seven shots, and a greater xG of 0.77 to Argentina’s 0.4. Moreover, Argentina had more shots off target however this changed in the second half when Argentina scored both their goals. In this half, Argentina majorly increased their xG to 2.58 to Canada’s 0.4. Moreover, the World Champions had 12 shots to Canada’s 3, with seven of those being on target.

Canada then faced Peru in their second-ever match at a Copa America in Kansas, in which they won 1-0. This was thanks to a Jonathon David goal in the 77th minute. Peru was the better side in the first half where they had five shots with two on target to Canada’s zero. Albeit, in the second half, Canada was the more dominant side, with 53% possession with an xG of 1.6 to Peru’s 0.31. Moreover, the Maple Leafs had more touches inside the opposition box with 15. However, it was the goal in the 77th minute that was most significant, giving Marsch’s side all three points.

Canada Injury and Suspensions

Marsch currently has no injuries or suspensions within his national team lineup. This means that Canada will go into their final group game with all players available.

Canada Predicted Lineup vs Argentina

GK – Crepeau

LB – Davies

CB – Cornelius

CB – Bombito

RB – Johnston

LM – Millar

CM – Eustaquio

CM – Kone

RM – Buchanan

ST – David

ST – Larin

Canada takes on Chile on Sunday 30th June 2024 at Orlando City Stadium in the 2024 Copa America.
