A major absentee from the England squad for Euro 2024 is that of the Manchester City man, who was one of the stars of the Euro 2020 for his side. Indeed, Grealish, who was hailed as “outstanding<\/a>” for his performance in the Cityzens win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last season, produced a number of brilliant performances in the previous Euros to help the Three Lions make it to the final. Now, a few years later, he hasn’t even been named in the final squad.<\/p>\n

Gareth Southgate has explained the difficulty of keeping the likes of Grealish and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison out of his squad for the European Championship. He stated: “It\u2019s been really tough. Madders [Maddison] and Jack [Grealish] are two of my best mates in the squad, probably spent most of my time with them since I\u2019ve been here. To see them go is not a nice feeling. And they\u2019ve both just said then, before they went, Madders last night, Jack just now, that they wish us all the best. They\u2019re gutted they\u2019ve been left out of the squad. We\u2019re so close as a group and no one is feeling really bitter about being left out.”<\/p>\n

Other Surprising England Squad Picks<\/h3>\n

Gareth Southgate has shown a lot of faith in the younger English players for the upcoming Euros. Crystal Palace have four of their players named in the squad, which includes young winger Eberechi Eze, centre-back Marc Guehi and midfielder Adam Wharton. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has also been picked after his impressive 2023\/24 season.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Trent Alexander-Arnold is considered as a midfielder than a defender in the England squad, while Jude Bellingham is considered among the forwards.
