FIFA\u2019s\u00a0Announcement<\/h3>\n

The FIFA Council officially announced the competition just two days before the 74th\u00a0FIFA Congress in Bangkok.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Women\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Club World Cup will take place for the first time across January and February 2026, with the host nation yet to\u00a0<\/span>be chosen<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will be a 16-team tournament held every four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The timeframe proposed allows the cup to fit around the different league schedules.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament looks set to happen during European domestic leagues and between the UEFA\u00a0<\/span>Women\u2019s<\/span> Champions League Group stages and knockout rounds.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>USA\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0National\u00a0<\/span>Women\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Soccer League<\/span>, however,<\/span>\u00a0usually kicks off in March, shortly after the Club World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Origins of the Tournament<\/h3>\n

FIFA started\u00a0<\/span>talks on<\/span>\u00a0plans for a global\u00a0<\/span>women\u2019s<\/span> club tournament in December 2022.\u00a0<\/span>Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, had expressed his intentions to stage a new world tournament within the female game as far back as 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following this\u00a0<\/span>week’s<\/span>\u00a0announcement,\u00a0<\/span>Infantino\u00a0<\/span><\/a>described the need for the Club World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>[<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>] crucial after the huge, huge success in Australia and New Zealand at the last [FIFA]\u00a0<\/span>Women’s<\/span>\u00a0World Cup, where we had two million viewers in the stadiums [and] two billion around the world<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He emphasized the need to:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>build on that success to create new global competitions because national team football is obviously based on club football as well<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Teams and Leagues Involved in the\u00a0Women’s\u00a0Club World Cup<\/h3>\n

FIFA is yet to confirm the qualification process for this new tournament. <\/span>They aim to represent all regions of the game – whilst keeping in mind that the best teams are currently playing in North America, Europe, and South America.<\/span><\/p>\n
