Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at the transfers, sackings, appointments and more that almost happened in football, changing the game we all know and love.<\/p>\n<p>Today we look back at the time when Argentina legend Diego Maradona almost signed for Sunderland.<\/p>\n<h2>It Almost Happened: Maradona Signs for Sunderland<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2020\/11\/25\/report-football-legend-diego-maradona-dies-at-60\/\" target=\"_self\">Diego Maradona<\/a> had a glittering and also controversial career. He won trophies in Argentina, Spain and Italy representing three of the top teams in world football. His skills brought success to Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli at club level while at international level he captained his country to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/11\/09\/footballs-biggest-controversies-diego-maradonas-hand-of-god\/\" target=\"_self\">World Cup<\/a> success.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> A creator and scorer of brilliant goals, he almost single-handedly led his teams to victory and trophies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His success and controversies both on and off the pitch have been well documented; however, many will not know that the Argentina superstar almost took a different route in club football in 1977, and if he had his way, his first European team would have been Sunderland.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Diego Maradona Wanted the Move to Sunderland to Happen<\/h3>\n<p>In 1977, a 17-year-old Maradona was already making the world take notice of his skills while playing at Argentinos Juniors. Sunderland were the first to make a move, and it almost happened.<\/p>\n<p>As Maradona\u2019s biographer, Daniel Arcucci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/sport\/nostalgia\/the-remarkable-story-of-how-diego-maradona-almost-signed-for-sunderland-afc-3047723\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a>: \u201cThe first offer that Maradona received was from England\u2019s Sunderland in 1977 and Maradona wanted to go. \u201cHe said \u2018If they don\u2019t sell me to Sunderland, I\u2019m retiring\u2019. At that time we didn\u2019t have a democratic government and they declared him untransferable, one of a group of players who were untransferable.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It took another five years for Maradona to get his move to Europe. However, for Sunderland fans, the move was not to Roker Park but to Barcelona.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Black Cats have had many \u201cWhat if\u201d moments in their long history. This one could be one of the biggest. Sunderland\u2019s history and Maradona\u2019s could have been very different if the transfer had happened.
