{"id":636866,"date":"2024-03-03T14:22:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-03T19:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=636866"},"modified":"2024-03-03T14:22:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T19:22:48","slug":"oxford-united-backroom-departures-portsmouth-defeat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2024\/03\/03\/oxford-united-backroom-departures-portsmouth-defeat\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Backroom Departures and Disappointing Defeat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Frustrating weeks and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2024\/02\/25\/oxford-united-poor-results-important-stadium-news\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a> have been going hand in hand recently as the last seven days were no different.<\/p>\n<p>The U&#8217;s announced a first-team physio would leave the club before Des Buckingham&#8217;s side suffered a defeat at Portsmouth.<\/p>\n<h2>Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Departures and Defeat<\/h2>\n<h3>First Team Physio to Depart<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford&#8217;s first-team physio Andy Caton will leave the club at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Caton joined the club four and a half years ago from Crystal Palace, initially with the academy.<\/p>\n<p>He moved into the first team during Covid and has been a valued member of the medical team, but leaves to concentrate on his own business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oufc.co.uk\/news\/2024\/february\/andy-caton-moves-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He said:<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s one of the toughest decisions I\u2019ve ever had to make.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My family has huge connections with Oxford United and I have loved working with Amy Cranston and the medical team. They are incredible people and the club is in very very good hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time I have had my own clinic which is growing and taking up more of my time, and with a young family I want to spend more time with them as well: they have to be my priority.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Football is a fantastic thing to be involved in but it can be all-consuming, you are working long hours, seven days a week so I just need to get the balance right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Chris Williams Departs<\/h3>\n<p>There was another departure but with immediate effect as communications manager <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OUFCOfficial\/status\/1763157330386927726?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Williams<\/a> stepped down from his role after 23 years at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Williams has been an integral part behind the scenes for over two decades and his departure was met with sadness from many Oxford fans.<\/p>\n<h3>Defeat at Fratton Park<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford suffered back-to-back defeats with a narrow defeat on the road at league leaders, Portsmouth.<\/p>\n<p>The U&#8217;s fell behind inside two minutes with goalkeeper Jamie Cumming making a mistake for the goal but Cameron Brannagan levelled just minutes later from the penalty spot.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Harris and Josh Murphy both struck the post as Oxford looked to take the lead but it was Pompey who got the crucial second goal when they hit the U&#8217;s on the break.<\/p>\n<p>Des Buckingham&#8217;s side are now three points behind Stevenage who have played a game less.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frustrating weeks and Oxford United have been going hand in hand recently as the last seven days were no different.
