{"id":629189,"date":"2023-09-12T04:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T08:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=629189"},"modified":"2023-09-12T04:59:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-12T08:59:00","slug":"oxford-united-stadium-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2023\/09\/12\/oxford-united-stadium-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Positive Step as Oxford United Look to Secure Site for New Stadium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2023\/09\/11\/oxford-united-weekly-manning-negru\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a>&#8216;s search for a new stadium took a positive step forward this week after officers recommended leasing or selling land to the club.<\/p>\n<h2>Stadium Update: Positive News for the U&#8217;s<\/h2>\n<h3>The Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>The U&#8217;s are looking to build a new stadium just south of Kidlington, north of the city, as their current licence at Grenoble Road expires in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the latest reports claim that Oxfordshire\u00a0County\u00a0Council officers have advised the local authority\u2019s cabinet to approve using council-owned land for a new stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation includes a condition that the club must produce a net zero plan when it comes to building the stadium and the agreement that the use of the land is for football and\/or community sports.<\/p>\n<p>If the cabinet approves the lease or sale at the next meeting on September 19, the club will then need planning approval from Cherwell District Council.<\/p>\n<h3>What Was Said<\/h3>\n<p>County council chief executive Martin Reeves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/23782204.oxford-united-stadium-officers-recommend-leasing-selling-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>: \u201cOfficers have made a recommendation for approval having looked carefully at a range of different information, including the views provided to us by those who took the time and care to respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are conditions attached to those recommendations including a net zero requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now for cabinet members to debate this in public on September 19 and come to a final decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will no doubt look carefully at the results of engagement with the public and stakeholders during both 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been extensive and thorough and the county council would once again like to sincerely thank everyone who has taken part for sharing their views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be stressed that, in the event that cabinet ultimately decides to approve the use of the land for the football club to build a new stadium,\u00a0Oxford United would still need to seek planning approval from Cherwell District Council as the local planning authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Future of Oxford United<\/h3>\n<p>With the club&#8217;s lease of the Kassam Stadium set to expire in 2026, and with little negotiation room with the owner about extending Oxford could find themselves homeless.<\/p>\n<p>The club have already hit a setback after their first choice site of Stratfield Brake was rejected but they acted quickly in identifying &#8216;The Triangle&#8217;, which is in the same area.<\/p>\n<p>Now, they need to get this moving quickly so they can begin the build and give the club a new home.<\/p>\n<p>Featured image: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/readephotography\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy and Sacha Reade<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nd\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC BY-ND 2.0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oxford United&#8216;s search for a new stadium took a positive step forward this week after officers recommended leasing or selling land to the club.
