{"id":629096,"date":"2023-09-11T01:51:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T05:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=629096"},"modified":"2023-09-11T01:51:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T05:51:16","slug":"oxford-united-weekly-manning-negru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2023\/09\/11\/oxford-united-weekly-manning-negru\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Awards, Contracts and Injury News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2023\/09\/05\/liam-mannings-oxford-united-transfer-window\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a> had a weekend off after their trip to Lincoln City was postponed due to several international call-ups.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite that, there is still lots of U&#8217;s news to cover, including a young goalkeeper joining a Premier League team, a manager of the month nomination for Liam Manning, and a new deal for a first-team player.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Awards, Contracts and Injuries<\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Everton Sign Oxford Goalkeeper<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Tuesday, Everton&#8217;s U21 side signed Oxford United goalkeeper, Fraser Barnsley.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 18-year-old academy graduate, who impressed as the U&#8217;s reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup last season, has penned a two-year deal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After sealing his move to Merseyside, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evertonfc.com\/news\/3671429\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barnsley told\u00a0evertontv<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s an amazing feeling and a very proud moment for me and my family.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019ll make sure I\u2019m improving every day I\u2019m in the building at Everton and I\u2019ll try to enjoy it because opportunities to play for a football club like this don\u2019t come along often.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great club with a great foundation and history and I\u2019m just buzzing to get started.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Read More<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2023\/09\/06\/oxford-united-bounce-back-win\/\" target=\"_self\">Three Talking Points: Depleted Oxford United Side Bounce Back With a Win<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Manning Nominated for Manager of the Month<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Head coach Liam Manning was then nominated for the League One manager of the month for August.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite an opening day defeat at Cambridge, Manning led his side to four successive wins to end the month top of the league.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Alongside Manning, Exeter City&#8217;s Gary Caldwell, former U&#8217;s defender and Port Vale manager Andy Crosby and Wigan&#8217;s Shaun Maloney had also been nominated.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Manning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oufc.co.uk\/news\/2023\/september\/liam-manning-nominated\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the judges&#8217; comments read<\/a>: &#8220;Manning has blown away any pre-season pessimism following last season\u2019s struggles and not just with the style of play he preaches.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Of their four wins from five games which sent Oxford top, two were at promotion favourites Derby and Barnsley.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Manning Scoops Award<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Friday, Manning was awarded the League One manager of the month for August.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As a result, the 38-year-old ended the club&#8217;s 18-year stretch without winning the award, with Ramon Diaz the last to win the accolade in January 2005.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In true Manning style, the head coach was quick to praise his backroom staff for helping him win the award. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/23775139.oxford-united-boss-liam-manning-wins-league-one-manager-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He said<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s a mixed thing for me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I\u2019m hugely proud and I\u2019d never disrespect the award or the history behind it, or the pride of winning it, but for me, it\u2019s bigger picture stuff.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m massively fortunate to have a terrific group of staff behind me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cHoggy\u2019s [Chris Hogg, assistant head coach] been with me for a long time, as has Pricey [Lewis Price, goalkeeper coach].<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019ve put them through a lot of stress and aggro, and that\u2019s why for me it\u2019s a staff of the month award, not a manager of the month \u2013 that\u2019s probably the biggest message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Manning also lauded his playing squad for their efforts, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s testament to what the players have delivered on the pitch and the work the staff have done all the way from the off-season to pre-season, to now.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe award is a terrific achievement, but it doesn\u2019t feel right that it\u2019s a single person being highlighted for it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m only as good as the players and the culture that we have, and the staff around me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Negru Pens New Oxford United Contract<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Defender Stephan Negru penned a new &#8220;longer-term&#8221; deal with the club this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 21-year-old, who joined the U&#8217;s in January, has impressed in his recent displays with Jordan Thorniley out injured.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oufc.co.uk\/news\/2023\/september\/stephan-negru-new-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaking to the club&#8217;s official website<\/a>, he said: \u201cIt was an easy decision<u>.<\/u>\u00a0I love being at the club, they have been great with me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It was a big step to come over from Ireland but the club have made me feel so at home, the fans have been brilliant and I definitely want to be part of what the Gaffer is building here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Liam Manning, who was awarded League One manager of the month for August earlier today, said: \u201cWe talk about depth of squad and people being ready when called upon. Stephan is a fantastic example of that.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;He had to be a little bit patient but he has seized his opportunity and has so much potential. He wants to learn and pushes himself to be better but along with that work ethic, he is also a terrific competitor.
