But whatever the genesis of their interest in Russo, and vice versa, that interest was finally realised this week when she joined the Gunners. First of all, they have strengthened themselves; secondly, they have weakened one of their major opponents in the Women’s Super League, Manchester United, who had actually finished above them last season; and, thirdly, they have done so without having to spend a single penny on a transfer fee, as Russo joined them for free after her contract had expired at United.

For all their considerable progress last season, in which they not only finished runners-up to champions Chelsea but reached their first ever FA Cup Final (where they lost to the same opponent), Manchester United must surely regret not selling Russo to Arsenal in the January transfer window, when the Gunners offered a world record fee for the women’s game of £500,000. Now, barely six months on, Arsenal have signed their No.1 target for free and United have failed to secure any transfer fee for her, let alone a world-record one.

Russo strengthens what was already a very strong Arsenal attack, albeit one that has been weakened in the short to medium term by the loss of two major components, Beth Mead, the stand-out player at the Euros last summer, and Vivianne Miedema of the Netherlands. They both suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, which not only curtailed their club season but ended their hopes of competing for their countries at the forthcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which starts in less than a fortnight’s time.

Read More: Women’s World Cup Betting Odds: Can the USWNT Win Once Again?

Assuming that “M & M” (Mead and Miedema) both make complete recoveries from their injuries, Russo will join them in a genuinely star-studded attack, one that boasts the two best players from the last two European Championships (Miedema and Mead, respectively) as well as the breakthrough player from the last tournament (Russo).

Russo will surely replace Stina Blackstenius as Arsenal’s first-choice central striker. The Swede is almost a female equivalent of another Arsenal striker, Eddie Nketiah: a game trier, but perhaps lacking in the sheer quality required to spearhead a team to a league title.

Russo has that quality in spades. She built superbly on her performances at the Euros last summer, when she scored four times for England despite not starting a single game, with an outstanding WSL season with Manchester United, scoring 10 goals in 20 matches. In so doing, she achieved the all-important ratio for a striker of scoring one goal in every two games, which has always been thought to be the hallmark of a successful centre-forward, at least until Erling Haaland started scoring at least one goal in each game for Manchester City.

And Her Transfer Also Benefits England

Embed from Getty Images

Russo completing her move to Arsenal before the World Cup starts will surely also benefit England. In the absence of both the injured Mead and the now-retired Ellen White, she will almost certainly start up front for Sarina Wiegman’s team in Australia and New Zealand. Consequently, she will finally have the chance to prove that she can be as effective at the international level as a starter as she has been as a substitute.

Read More: LWOS Players to Watch at the 2023 Wome’s World Cup

Also, the fact that Russo has finally determined her club future will probably make her even more relaxed and at ease at international level, which can only benefit a player for whom instinct and the ability to do the unexpected (as proven conclusively against Sweden last summer) are all-important.

But Arsenal and England Face Two Powerful Opponents

Embed from Getty Images

The problem for Russo is that at both club and international level she will face two powerful, indeed formidable, opponents. In the Women’s Super League, Chelsea, who have their own superstar striker in Australia’s Sam Kerr, absolutely remain the team to beat, having won the last four WSL titles in a row and five of the last six. (Arsenal, in 2018/19, are the only team to have interrupted their long run of domestic success.) Even after the signing of Russo, Chelsea are likely to remain strong favourites going into the next WSL campaign, although Arsenal’s simultaneous strengthening of themselves and weakening of Manchester United has undoubtedly established themselves as the Blues’ strongest challengers for next season.

At international level, she and the Lionesses will face an even more formidable opponent at the World Cup, namely the USA, the defending champions. They are bidding not only to become the most successful women’s international football team of all time but the most successful international football team of all time of either gender. Having already won two World Cups in a row to establish themselves among the pantheon of great international teams, they now have the opportunity to make it an unprecedented hat-trick of World Cup wins, which would make them – statistically at least – the GOATs of all international football and not just women’s.

Nevertheless, despite the formidable opponents that she has to overcome at both club and international level, “Lessi” can be optimistic that in joining Arsenal and spearheading England in the Antipodes, she has two outstanding chances to improve upon her feats of last summer. If she takes them, she could become both an all-time great Gunner and an all-time great of English football.

Featured Image

Photo by James Boyes: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesboyes/52786634867/ CC by SA 2: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19125117

When Alessia Russo scored her audacious back-heeled goal for England against Sweden in last year’s European Championship semi-final, the watching Ian Wright, who has long been an ally of, and advocate for, women’s football, instantly christened her “Lessi”, in tribute to her Messi-like brilliance.
