Sunderland have completed their third signing of the January transfer window. Premier League striker Joe Gelhardt has signed on loan for the rest of the season. The news was announced via the club’s official website safc.com<\/a>. According to the Sunderland Echo<\/a>, the Black Cats beat a host of other clubs to win the race for the Leeds United young star.<\/p>\n

Gelhardt follows France Under-21 international winger Isaac Lihadji and France youth international midfielder\u00a0Pierre Ekwah<\/a> who signed permanent deals from LOSC Lille and West Ham United respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is a deal that should benefit all concerned. Sunderland<\/a> were in need of a new striker having only Ross Stewart and Leeds United<\/a> want the player to gain regular and valuable first-team experience. Sunderland\u2019s reputation for developing young players will have also appealed to both Leeds and Gelhardt. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the Black Cats battling in the top half of the Championship and just three points from third position, 20-year-old Gelhardt could benefit immensely from the experience of pushing for the playoffs, Sunderland’s attacking style of play and performing in front of 40,000 fans on a regular basis. <\/span><\/p>\n
