Sunderland have completed their first signing of the January transfer window. Midfielder Pierre Ekwah has completed his move to the Black Cats from West Ham United<\/a> for an undisclosed fee, signing a deal until the summer of 2027. He will wear the number 39 shirt. The news was announced via Sunderland\u2019s official website safc.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Head coach Tony Mowbray has expressed his desire to strengthen his midfield and today he did just that. Sunderland<\/a> are also believed to be targeting at least two new strikers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Who is Pierre Ekwah? <\/span><\/h3>\n

Ekwah began his career with spells at several amateur sides before joining the well-renowned INF Clairefontaine Academy in France. Following this, he signed for Nantes before moving to Chelsea<\/a> spending three years with the Blues.\u00a0 <\/span>In the summer of 2021, Ekwah, following a successful trial signed for West Ham.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being a part of West Ham\u2019s Premier League squad, 6ft 2 21-year-old Ekwah did not feature for the Hammers first team in the league. He has however played in the EFL trophy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ekwah Can’t-Wait to Get Started<\/span><\/h3>\n

In his first interview since signing for Sunderland<\/a>, Pierre Ekwah said what it was that attracted him to Wearside. He said<\/a>: \u201cThe history and vision of the Club really attracted me and I\u2019m delighted to be here. I see myself as a number eight who can handle the ball well, but I can also do the defensive side of the game. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s great to see the Club trusting young players and that\u2019s something that really appealed to me \u2013 it seems a great environment for me to develop as both a person and a player, and I can\u2019t wait to get started.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Tony Mowbray was delighted to welcome his first signing to the club and is looking forward to working with Ekwah. He said<\/a>: We are delighted to get the deal done and welcome Pierre to Sunderland. He is a player we have been monitoring for some time, and we believe he will add something different to the dynamic of our midfield. <\/span><\/p>\n

Having met him, he has a brilliant personality \u2013 he wants to get better and show he can play first-team football. He brings a level of physicality and we\u2019re really looking forward to working with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
