Mowbray has been out of work since leaving Rovers at the end of last season, guiding them to eighth in the Championship. A report by Joe Nicholson of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/sport\/football\/sunderland-afc\/sunderland-close-to-appointing-tony-mowbray-following-alex-neils-departure-to-stoke-city-3823256\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunderland Echo<\/a> suggests a deal is close to being completed.<\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old who has also managed Celtic and West Bromwich Albion has links with Sunderland&#8217;s current head of player recruitment Stuart Harvey. The pair worked together at Ewood Park.<\/p>\n<p>Should the deal for Mowbray to take charge fall through, the Black Cats seemingly have other options.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Liam Manning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/footballleagueworld.co.uk\/premier-league-coach-and-league-one-manager-to-rival-tony-mowbray-for-sunderland-vacancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Football League World<\/a> and journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/posts\/sunderland-barry-71070871\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alan Nixon<\/a>, MK Dons manager Liam Manning was under consideration by Sunderland. 37-year-old Manning joined MK in October of last year following spells as head coach at Belgian side Lommel SK and academy roles at Ipswich Town and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2022\/08\/26\/uefa-europa-conference-league-draw\/\" target=\"_self\">West Ham United<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Manning led the Dons to a third-place finish in League One last season narrowly missing out on automatic promotion.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Anthony Barry<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On Monday morning James Hunter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/sport\/football\/football-news\/kristjaan-speakman-promises-update-sunderland-24877354\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chronicle<\/a> reported that Chelsea&#8217;s first team coach Anthony Barry was under consideration. Barry joined <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2022\/08\/29\/chelsea-young-players-depart-club\/\" target=\"_self\">Chelsea<\/a> in 2020 following three years as Paul Cook&#8217;s assistant at Wigan Athletic. The 36-year-old has also had spells coaching the Republic of Ireland and Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Despite never being a head coach or manager as yet, Barry is thought to be highly rated and highly thought of in football circles.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Sean Dyche<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to Oscar Haley of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/sport\/football\/football-news\/next-sunderland-manager-odds-favourite-24865851\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chronicle<\/a>, former Burnley boss Sean Dyche was quickly made the favourite with the bookies. Dyche was sacked as the Clarets manager last season and has been out of work since.<\/p>\n<p>Dyche led <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2022\/07\/14\/chelsea-loans-out-ian-maatsen\/\" target=\"_self\">Burnley<\/a> to the Premier League twice during his 10 years at Turf Moor. He also guided the team to a seventh-placed finish qualifying for the Europa League. The 51-year-old was controversially sacked by Burnley with eight games left to play last season. The decision backfired as the club suffered relegation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Robbie Fowler<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A surprise contender, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2022\/08\/29\/liverpool-sheffield-united-sander-berge\/\" target=\"_self\">Liverpool<\/a> legend Robbie Fowler put his name forward for the job in response to a message on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Robbie9Fowler\/status\/1563868002801655809?s=20&#038;t=nA_f75dMbEb21CJkzIQ9UQ<\/p>\n<p>Fowler took his first step into management at Thai League One side Muangthong United in 20. He lasted just 13 games, winning four. In 2019 it was announced that the former England international had signed a 2-year deal with\u00a0Australian\u00a0Hyundai A-League\u00a0club\u00a0Brisbane Roar to become their new head coach. His tenure would last one year when Fowler decided to return to England following the Covid outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>His latest role was at\u00a0Indian Super League\u00a0side\u00a0East Bengal where he was manager from October 2020 to September 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sunderland manager&#8217;s job is available once again.
