Manchester United wants Frenkie De Jong, and there is no backup plan if the deal fails. According to Andy Mitten in GQ magazine<\/a>, United have no alternative options if De Jong doesn’t sign.<\/p>\n

This could prove a disastrous transfer mistake for the Red Devils. It is a real possibility that the Dutchman will remain in Spain this summer, and if United don’t acquire a new central midfielder before next season they will be in a very sticky situation, with their current options extremely limited.<\/p>\n

Manchester United<\/a> are still hoping to sign Frenkie de Jong, so much so that they do not have a backup plan should the deal not go through. Erik ten Hag worked with him at Ajax so knows his skillset, and desperately wants him<\/a> as his first marquee signing at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

Ten Hag also believes that De Jong is better than anything United currently have, so is desperate to bring the player in. Ten Hag is willing to be patient, although it has been reported<\/a> that he is frustrated by United’s lack of progress in making the signing.<\/p>\n

United’s midfield options have been severely depleted in recent months. Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata, all left earlier in the summer at the end of their contracts. Matic was the Red Devils’ only recognised defensive midfielder, while Pogba, Mata, and Lingard provided offensive quality through the middle.<\/p>\n
