Ajax have put in a bid for Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn. The player was already looking for a new venture in past transfer windows<\/a>, but this time he may be allowed to leave as part of Antonio Conte’s rebuild.<\/p>\n

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutchman is likely going to Ajax with Spurs now negotiating a fee for the player. Bergwijn is happy to sign for Ajax and with a long term contract ready to be agreed as talks progress.<\/p>\n

Steven Bergwijn Could Return to Eredivisie<\/h3>\n

Bergwijn is simply not getting enough minutes at Spurs to justify him staying at the club. This is despite his herculean efforts against Leicester City<\/a> to wrestle all three points back from the Foxes. He pretty much won the Oracle Most Improbable Comeback Award single-handedly. Sadly for Spurs, this doesn’t count as a trophy.<\/p>\n

It’s another case of a move that hasn’t quite worked out for the club. Bergwijn moved from PSV in January 2020, going on to make over 80 appearances for Spurs. But his eight goals and ten assists spell a time that was far less productive than his previous career in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Bergwijn’s record at PSV makes for much better reading with 31 goals and 41 assists in his 149 senior games there. Now Ajax are after his signature, with a deal expected to be agreed this summer. The contract would run until 2027.<\/p>\n

Spurs Shape Up Squad<\/h3>\n

Tottenham Hotspur made their first proper signing of the season<\/a> in Ivan Perisic. He is the first of a few new players expected to come in this summer. Perisic is likely to play a wing-back role but could venture as far forward as Bergwijn gets in a game. That said, Bergwijn was already struggling for game-time without any new introductions. The club are also after young Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez<\/a>, yet another attacking talent.<\/p>\n

Bergwijn was definitely beginning to grow into his role at Spurs. His two goals against Leicester really showcased that he was able to come on and change a match. But he does not seem to have much of a future under Conte. Again, Bergwijn is one of the players who has suffered under a string of Spurs managers in Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and now Conte. It just hasn’t worked out for Bergwijn or for Tottenham.<\/p>\n

It will be a good move for all parties once Tottenham and Ajax agree on a transfer fee. Bergwijn is hunting down a World Cup spot for the Netherlands and would have a much better chance by playing week-in week-out. Spurs need to clear space for some new arrivals and Ajax can sign a quality player who has definitely shown signs of promise.<\/p>\n
