The Swedish defender is heading home on a free transfer as she will be joining Hammarby. This will bring to an end Andersson’s four-and-a-half-year stint with Chelsea that saw her win a number of trophies.

Jonna Andersson Leaving Chelsea This Summer

Jonna Andersson to depart Chelsea at the end of the season.💙

After over four years at Chelsea, @Jandersson25 will head to Hammarby in her native Sweden this summer.🇸🇪

— Chelsea FC Women (@ChelseaFCW) April 5, 2022

Consistent Quality

Andersson has made 130 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club, operating mostly as a left-sided defender. In that time she has won the Women’s Super League three times, the Women’s FA Cup twice, the FA WSL Cup, and the Women’s Community Shield. All the while she has been playing regularly for the Swedish national team.

Time to Move on

Jonna Andersson has seen a slight reduction in her playing time for Chelsea this season. Of her 16 appearances in the WSL, seven have come as a substitute. This is a big change from her being one of the first names on the sheet and proves that Chelsea are continuously adding quality at every position. With players like Alsu Abdullina coming in as wide defenders, the competition for a spot in the starting xi has grown even more intense. This also means that Chelsea will be fine without Andersson, while her experience and consistency off the bench will no doubt be missed, this is a team stacked to the gills with quality and ambition.

Andersson’s new challenge is somewhat similar to her old one as she returns to the league Chelsea originally signed her from. Unlike her old club Linkopings, who were multiple-time league champions, Hammarby is a team on the rise currently in the middle of the pack in the Swedish league. Andersson will no doubt revel in the challenge of helping the side get to the top spot eventually as she aims to continue her streak of success.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Chelsea Women have announced that Jonna Andersson will be departing the club at the end of the season.
