Steph Houghton was captain before she took over but remains unavailable for selection with injury. Williamson has regularly worn the armband since Wiegman took over and that is something that will continue over the course of the latest international break.

Williamson has represented her country on 24 occasions, scoring twice. She is one of the game’s brightest talents and will sport the armband with uncontested pride.

The versatile defender can also operate in midfield and has already proved popular under Wiegman, a European Championship winner as manager of the Netherlands.

Williamson is a one-club woman having spent her entire career with Arsenal, the club she has supported since childhood. She now lives the dream in more ways than one, captaining her country for the time being.

Lotte Wubben-Moy Remains Absent

England also announced that Williamson’s teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy is yet to report for duty as she is still being assessed and treated by Arsenal having missed their 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Friday, February 11. In her absence, 23 players trained today.

Wubben-Moy has played for England on six occasions so far.

This will be the first time the Lionesses have played since November’s record-breaking 20-0 win over Latvia at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium.

Wiegman’s reign in charge so far has been lacking a real test for her England side and she will be glad to see her side tested by some of the highest-ranked sides in the world. With England ranked eighth, their opponents Canada are sixth, Germany third and Spain ninth in the women’s world rankings.

The competition gets underway on February 17 with Germany v Spain at the Riverside Stadium before England host Canada at the same venue. The Lionesses will also take to the field at Norwich City’s Carrow Road and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Arsenal star Leah Williamson has been named England Women captain for this week’s Arnold Clark Cup fixtures.
