Steven Gerrard has reiterated<\/a> that Aston Villa\u2019s<\/a> Scottish midfielder John McGinn is not for sale and the club are preparing to offer him a new contract, according to John Percy of The Telegraph,<\/a> as they look to stave off interest from Manchester United.<\/a><\/p>\n

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their midfield in the January transfer window as Ralf Rangnick looks for a top four finish, but Aston Villa manager Gerard has made it clear that the club have no intention of selling the player, who remains a key part of their plans and a new contract is on the table for the Scot.<\/p>\n

McGinn arrived at Villa Park from Hibernian in 2018 and has become a firm fan favourite. Gerrard wants to build his team around the 27-year-old and Villa are also not a club that are in need of selling prize assets. As reported by the Telegraph<\/a>, Gerrard said:\u00a0\u201cWe are certainly not a club that is looking to sell. Our intention is to keep John McGinn here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerrard even went as far as to say that McGinn is loved at Villa Park:\u00a0\u201cWe want [McGinn] to remain a Villa player and we can\u2019t be any clearer on that. We love the player, we love the human being and we want to help him. We certainly see it as a compliment when our best players, or any of our players, are linked with big moves away. I think it shows they are playing at a consistent level.”<\/p>\n

Villa have already starting building a stronger squad in the January transfer window with the loan signing of Gerrard\u2019s former Liverpool<\/a> team mate Philippe Coutinho<\/a> being a high profile addition and the new contract for McGinn will also be a huge boost for the club, should it happen.<\/p>\n
