Newcastle United<\/a> are close to completing their second signing of the window, with Burnley<\/a> striker Chris Wood close to making a move to Tyneside.<\/p>\n

According to John Percy of the Daily Telegraph<\/a>, Wood is due to complete a medical before putting pen-to-paper on the final details of his contract.<\/p>\n

Shrewd Move?<\/h3>\n

The New Zealand international might not be the most appealing signing – and is not to the levels of dubious links with some of the world’s best stars – but he could prove to be a shrewd signing.<\/p>\n

Wood has been consistent in the Premier League for Burnley. Before this season, he had scored 55 goals in four Premier League seasons at Turf Moor.<\/p>\n

However, the 30-year-old has struggled in front of goal recently, with just three goals to his name so far this season.<\/p>\n

Despite that, Wood possesses Premier League experience and quality, a trait that Newcastle are desperate for right now. The days of being linked with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland now may seem far-fetched, but Eddie Howe needs to avoid relegation in order for the new Saudi Arabian project to work.<\/p>\n

As a result, the Burnley striker is the latest player they have turned to following the arrival of Kieran Trippier.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

It is believed that a \u00a320 million fee has been agreed with Burnley, with Wood due to make the switch to the North East in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Newcastle are in the market for a striker following an injury to Callum Wilson, who is expected to be out for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Despite Wood’s age, he is an excellent option as a second-choice striker, or as part of a 4-4-2 system once Wilson returns to fitness.<\/p>\n

Should he sign in time, he may make his debut for the Magpies at home to Watford on Saturday.<\/p>\n
