Edinson Cavani will remain a Manchester United<\/a> player this January, interim boss Ralf Ragnick has confirmed.<\/p>\n

The Uruguayan’s future had been in doubt, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

Out of Contract This Summer<\/h3>\n

Currently, it looks like Cavani will be leaving the club at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford in June and is yet to agree to a new deal with the club. As a result, speculation has arisen that United may look to sell him now, instead of lose him on a free.<\/p>\n

However, Ragnick – who remains in interim charge – squashed those rumours ahead of their game against Wolves<\/a> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had quite a few conversations in the last couple of weeks \u2014 probably the player with whom I have spoken most,\u201d he said when speaking to The Athletic.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI told him from the very first day that, for me, he is a highly important player.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is probably the only one who can play as a striker back to goal and face to goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis professionalism, his work ethic is just amazing and I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season. He knows that.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe also knows how highly I rate him and how highly I respect him, and that was also the reason why I played him [against Burnley]\u00a0from the beginning together with Cristiano.\u201d<\/p>\n

Important Role to Play in the Second Half of the Season<\/h3>\n

Under the German manager, Cavani can play an important role for Manchester United during the second half of the season.<\/p>\n

The Uruguayan featured sporadically under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and has only made seven appearances in the top-flight so far this season.<\/p>\n

However he has come into form in recent games, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, which earned him a start in the follow match against Burnley.<\/p>\n

Ragnick opted to use him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and that could be how the German deploys him in future games.<\/p>\n
