{"id":605901,"date":"2021-12-26T13:21:26","date_gmt":"2021-12-26T18:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/?p=605901"},"modified":"2021-12-26T13:21:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-26T18:21:26","slug":"oxford-united-portsmouth-postponed-injury-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/12\/26\/oxford-united-portsmouth-postponed-injury-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Postponements, Injury News and Contract Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/football\/2021\/12\/19\/oxford-united-loss-wigan-athletic-covid\/\" target=\"_self\">Oxford United<\/a> weren&#8217;t in action this week after their League One fixture at Fratton Park on Boxing Day was positioned due to Covid.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the club have begun talks with some of their out of contract players and manager Karl Robinson provided an injury update ahead of next week&#8217;s matches.<\/p>\n<h2>Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Pompey Postponed, Injury News and Contract Talks<\/h2>\n<h3>Contract Talks Begin<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford United have begun talks with the clubs&#8217; out of contract players, according to Karl Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>The U&#8217;s boss is at risk of losing nine senior players with a further four youngsters also out of contract in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are James Henry, Mark Sykes and captain Elliott Moore, while midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin is also on the list, although he hasn&#8217;t played since November with an ACL injury.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson is determined to keep hold of the Spaniard. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/19797958.karl-robinson-alex-gorrin-oxford-united-contract-talks\/?s=09\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaking to the Oxford Mail,<\/a> he said: &#8220;We\u2019re speaking a lot about who we want to look for, for next season. Alex will be someone we\u2019ll offer a contract to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he\u2019s given this football club in the last two or three years, he\u2019s somebody I\u2019ve been able to rely on for a long time and he\u2019s someone that means a lot to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why when he got injured it was gutting for him and for his career \u2013 it was a difficult one to accept.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Henry has racked up over 200 appearances and 50 goals during his time at the club while Sykes and Moore have been regular starters this season.<\/p>\n<h3>Portsmouth v Oxford United Postponed<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford&#8217;s Boxing Day trip to Fratton Park was postponed after continued positive Covid cases in the Portsmouth camp.<\/p>\n<p>The south coast club have called off games against AFC Wimbledon and Exeter City, meaning their match against the U&#8217;s is the third in succession.<\/p>\n<p>Danny Cowley&#8217;s side informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil the fixture.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second match Oxford have seen postponed this season due to Covid after their trip to Wigan was called off just three hours before kick-off.<\/p>\n<h3>U&#8217;s Youngster Sent Out on Loan<\/h3>\n<p>Oxford United youngster Will Owens has joined Biggleswade Town on a one-month work experience.<\/p>\n<p>The second-year scholar could make his debut on Boxing day on the opposing side against Ben Watt and St Ives Town.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old left-winger has impressed for the youth team this season but has often been deployed as a left-back.<\/p>\n<h3>Injury Update<\/h3>\n<p>With their Boxing Day match against Portsmouth postponed due to Covid, the U&#8217;s received relatively good news regarding injuries on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>James Henry limped off with a calf injury during the warm-up ahead of the defeat against Wigan Athletic but the U&#8217;s boss believes the 32-year-old could only miss one month of action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/sport\/19805160.update-oxford-uniteds-james-henry-nathan-holland-covid\/?s=09\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaking to the Oxford Mail,<\/a> he said: \u201cIt\u2019s three to four weeks we think. It\u2019s better than we thought, thankfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time of year everyone has injuries, coughs, colds and Covid, you\u2019re always without players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther than Jamo and the likes of Alex (Gorrin) we\u2019ve got most of our players raring to go for the AFC (Wimbledon) game. We\u2019ll be ready for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson will be able to welcome back several other key players for the match against the Dons.
